You might try one of the binary to ascii editors out there. Wikipedia has a
comparison list with links to each. Just pick one out and use it to view your binary backup files.
Edit: I had to do a search of my system to find the one I use. XV132 is the one I stayed with. I tried a few and this is the one I kept.
