just out of curiosity what app are you using when trying to highlight/select, i find it depends on what screen u'r using in order to get things done? for example in opera u actually have to switch into text selection mode if u want to highlight and copy

As for copying, holding shift and using the arrows will highlight/select text, and holding ctrl will highlight/select entire words. It works the exact same in windows.
