Posted by Nishanth Samala on August 11th, 2008 Why suddenly am I talking about the hardware panel when I’ve been writing about software? Well, today I’ve got some breaking news over from XDA-Developers. I’ll explain more about that below. First off, the hardware panel on the Touch Diamond includes a D-Pad, scroll wheel, center button and four hard buttons: Home, Back, Answer/Start call key, and End Call Key. Read on to find out about the multitouch features on the Diamond! The scroll wheel in the touch-based (not like the click wheel on older iPods) and is used in many of the built-in apps. For example, as opposed to touching the screen in the Photos/Album app, you can scroll clockwise to zoom in and counter-clockwise to zoom out. It can also be used as a jogwheel. In the camera app, you can scroll up and down menus using this wheel. In addition to this, there are four white LEDs just inside the scroll wheel ring that light up for different notifications. While charging these lights fade on and off for a really cool effect. The center button on the Touch Diamond is interesting because it is both a capacitive and tactile button. Because of the capacitive touch, the button will sense your finger right above it or touching it. For example, in the Camera app, you can autofocus the camera by holding you finger close to the button. Once you press down on the button, it will take the picture. The D-Pad is neatly hidden right around the center button. Though you can’t see them, there are four tactile buttons right below the area in above, below, right and left of the center button. The other four hard buttons are standard, though the Home and Back buttons are unusual because they are more commonly seen on Smartphones, not Pocket PC phones. But the amazing news is that the whole hardware panel is a gigantic capacitive touch pad! That means the device senses you fingers whenever they are passing over the panel. Thanks to matou25 @XDA-Developers who found the HTC Diamond Debug Tools, people have found that the Diamond supports multi-touch operations! |
