Locked Into a 2yr Contract w/ Sprint? Get out here...

Sprint is raising a fee which allows for you to get out of the Sprint contract you just signed up for. This would allow easy access to upgrading to the Nexus One, Hero, or just getting out of the stupid contract. Very YMMV

Awesome...let's get out of a locked contract with the best of the major wireless companies, to go sign a locked contract with a much more expensive, less customer friendly wireless company. YAY!!!!

Re: Locked Into a 2yr Contract w/ Sprint? Get out here...

Well, I made my call to Account Services, and then having had no success I spoke with their managing dept (?) when they requested it at the end of the 'unresolved' call. Neither part went so well. I was trying to get the contract terminated with the ETF waived, and have my account put on month-to-month so I could have freedom to choose what I want to do in the near future.

They did both acknowledge the regulatory fee change as something that would allow me to terminate my contract (over a year left) without the ETF, but insisted that I would have to (within 30 days of my Dec billing cycle/notice date) port away from Sprint, or outright cancel my service to have that fee waived. No option to go month-to-month with the contract terminated.

Maybe I missed something in the nuances of conversation that would have smoothed things out, but alas I failed.

I told them that having just read the bill & discovered the charge, that with only 8 days until my '30 days to cancel from notice' is up, I didn't have enough time to explore other options for porting, and that I would like to have the contract terminated and the ETF waived and just go month-to-month until I could determine my best option. They balked.

They said that I could cancel with no fee, or port and have the fee waived after it appears, but if I let my service stay active past the '30 days from notice' (8 left) that it would be 'agreeing to the fee and the contract' and so basically, nothing changed, still contracted. I insisted that I was not willing to 'agree' to the fee and wanted the contract terminated, ETF waived, and my service active until I decide what else I wanted to do about my phone line.

Along with refusing, they asked why I wanted to cancel over the fee but was basically asking to stay on with Sprint which would mean the fee being attached, I was somewhat stumped for a *good* answer, but gave them the best I had -- the truth. I told them it was the principal of them breaking the contract and not the monetary impact, and that I supposed I would have to endure the fee temporarily, without having agreed to it, in a month-to-month form until I did whatever I decided to do (or not do). Was that my undoing?

I figure I either said too much, or too little (and I lean towards too much) -- any suggestions if I decide to call back and try again?

Re: Locked Into a 2yr Contract w/ Sprint? Get out here...

I brought this up in a different thread.

If you really wanted to bend your morals, it seems like you could port your number to a different carrier and cancel Sprint. Then simply sign back up as a "new customer" to get all the perks and discounts etc.

I'm not sure its worth the hassle, but theoretically you might be able to get a heavily discounted new device, sell your old one and make out pretty well.

I believe breaking you out the contract allows them to terminate your service. Like SPrint always goes its who receives your call. Few might allow and most will not. it might take several attempts. but be aware the new policy is to note the account with any interaction via telephone

Wirelessly posted (HTC Hero: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.5; en-us; A6277 Build/CUPCAKE) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1)

I want to cancel only to return with new customer perks. I'd stomach a payg phone in the interim.

I believe you have to wait 90 days before you can be considered a new customer again.
