No downside I can think of right off the bat. If you root your phone and the upgrade comes out for 2.1 nobody here knows exactly what will happen. It's a speculation. I do know this for sure, after rooting my phone, I decided to write the how to about rooting my phone so I used the Sprint Utility to put CL14 back on my phone and it indeed took CL14 that means I started from the original kernel
With that said, when the new 2.1 one comes out, I'm guessing you can either just put 2.1 on your phone and it will overwrite everything or reflash and put CL14 back on first, then apply 2.1.
Most likely 2.1 won't be an upgrade, meaning it builds itself on top of the existing 1.5 build rather it's a build all it's own and will whip out anything on the phone before installing itself...
Like I said, it's all speculation along with past experience to come up with possibilities, might be WAY off or might me dead on!
