Re: **The Touch Pro Video Playback Bible**
If you have a late model nVidia card that supports Cuda, by far the fastest encoding is done using Badaboom. I encoded 'Caprica', a 2 hr movie in just a little over 5 minutes. I have a GTX285 OC with 240 cores. It truly flies.
Trial version is free at: http://www.badaboomit.com/

Re: **The Touch Pro Video Playback Bible**
very informative post. i'm glad it's a sticky.
you know, its funny.....before the TP first came out in the states, it was already a hot topic that i had been following in the leadup to the Sprint release. the europeans were b!tching about the poor TCPMP playback long before the device hit the states.....i almost skipped on the device because of what i was hearing....er, reading... in the end, after playing with coworkers iPhones(read: having them rubbed in my face), i decided that the VGA for web browsing was reason enough to justify getting the phone. once i got my TP, i accidentally opened one of my MP4 movies(Fight Club, iirc) in WMP because it was the default player after a ROM flash, and instantly noticed the far superior quality. i chalked it up to the ROM, but when i set up TCPMP, it played a little smoother, but still like sh!t in comparison to WMP. in my excitement, i posted my discovery in one of the vid playback disscussion threads active at the time in the Raph forums on xda. my post drew countless flames by the anti-WMP pro-Core zealots in response. people refused to believe me! they were citing benchmarks and old performance write ups on TCPMP/Coreplayer, mocking me, and basically called me a liar. since i have little to no knowledge about the inner workings of codecs, wrappers, and vid playback other then what they are, i didn't even reply and just kept it "my little secret". i did get a few PMs from people thanking me for pointing out that WMP no longer sucked, and a few months later, one guy even PMed me a link to a writeup he did on how to rip-dvds and encode them for optimal viewing on the TP. thanks to your post i now know: a) i'm not crazy after all!!! lol b) why WMP works so much better on the TP....i had a feeling MS had some hooks into "hidden" HW/drivers, but wasn't sure, and i've wondered to this day thanks for clearing the fog!

Re: **The Touch Pro Video Playback Bible**
I tried making a 640x480 MP4 from a DVD and it doesn't play flawlessly in WMP. I need to read up in this, too. Do these phones use DMA for accessing data from SD and internal memory?

Re: **The Touch Pro Video Playback Bible**
I respect the admin and Mod's decisions to clean up the forum, but is there a particular reason this thread was un-stickied? I just referred a couple of people to it from another forum, and they told me they couldn't find it... the information is still relevant and many n00bs continue to be confused...

Re: **The Touch Pro Video Playback Bible**
I use DVD Catalyst for my converting either from DVD or from a video file. It works pretty fast and I use TCPMP to play the video. My file sizes usually range from 70mb - 220 mb.

Re: **The Touch Pro Video Playback Bible**
ive read this whole thread and didnt see anyone mentioning this. so ive decided to share it with everyone.
TP can, i repeat, CAN play 640x480 pixel pefrect videos smoothly. you just gotta encode them right... ive been doing this for months so i know. encode your videos into MP4 using any program that utilize x264 encoder. Personally i use MeGUI and find it to produce the best results. Now, set your encoder to use x264 @ 400Kbps-800Kbps for video depending on how much motion is in the video. Also set it to use AAC @ 64Kpbs-192Kbps for audio depending on what you use to watch (aka headphones vs external sound system). now, the important part. make sure to set x264 to encode using "Baseline" profile, cuz the Main/High profiles will NOT play smoothly on your TP... once you've encoded your videos, make sure to play them using either WMP or HTC Album. CorePlayer & TCPMP do not utilize harware accelerated playback as efficiently as the other two so they will experience major stuttering on high-action parts... those who claim that h264 videos look crappy simply havent seen a propely-encoded h264 video. so plz do some research before claiming Xvid/DivX/WMV/whatever is better. PS: if there is enough interest, i can post a sample video to back up my claims |
