What does G-Sensor (Sprint TP2) actually do?

I have been looking for info on the use of the g-sensor during calls. I am on my second Touch pro2 and neither turn the speakerphone on when sat face down during a call. Is there a setting I am missing? I never tried placing it fae down to ignore a call though.
