SMS ringer length

I recently created a new ringer just for SMS messages. The ringer works great and all however I cannot get it to stop.

Is there a way in the registry or anything that would stop the ringer as soon as you read the notification or press a button?

Basically stopping the sound because you know it is there, instead of listening to 30 seconds of "Peanut butter jelly time".

If by any chance there is, would there in fact be one for the vibrate function?

i would like to know how to do this too. the reason i have a long ringtone is because i dont always hear it in the first few seconds. but it seems as if there is no way to shut it off while its ringing.
