Re: PPC 6800 & GPS tracking

in visual studio, com4 can be read very easily. that means that an app could be written to activate the astro, retrieve gps, close gps, send a text at repeat intervals, turning it into a push instead of a pull...

also, to turn off the gpsGate tray, run with the -notrayicon switch. so the shortcut would point to:
"\Program Files\GpsGate 2.0\GpsGateCE.EXE" -notrayicon

but like it was posted before, gpsgate sucks the battery dry.

Another option would be to programatically provide a "window" of opportunity, like between 9-10 am... then a text would respond to a pull...

Or you know.... the more I think about it.... If you just had a prog to respond to the text, activate astro, read the com port, deactivate gps, send a text, you'd basically have what the sprint terminator program does with the added benefit of priming the gps.

now that's something I can write...

Re: PPC 6800 & GPS tracking

Has anyone seen this?

It uses WiFi, Cell towers, and GPS as long as you're in a well mapped area I think it would work with or without GPS signal.

copycounsler, the battery issue is almost a non issue for my application, gpsgate seems an ideal solution since it can do "tracks" as well as locating. I think as long as something is periodically keeping the gps connection alive I will be in good shape. I like the txt message idea to activate the gps so we could locate an employee by waking up the GPS. Is this something you'd be able to help us develop? It amazes me that Verizon hasnt already created a solution to this. From my understanding it has to do with their legal dept and privacy issues....but that should be null and void on a corporate account....

Re: PPC 6800 & GPS tracking

How do you want to track using the GPS. MS Visual Studio 2008 and Window Mobile 6.0 SDK has a sample GPS program at (after install of SDK) C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CS\GPS which I modified to display all the GPS information. The information is based on MS example driver for the GPS. It includes lon, lat, heading, speed, time of day, elevation, and number of sat in use. The program did not work correctly because the GPS needed returned null strings which cause an exceptions to the displaying program. I modified the program and it works for me. If needed, I can send you that I created which is in C# or I can send you the compiled program and you can tell me what you need to have in addition. I will need to purchase the Visual Studio so if I am going to continue to develop using Visual Studio 2008.

Yes, I'm using it. it is slightly buggy with cdma towers right now, but with built in gps, you don't really need it.. and in downtown, there's enough wifi to "help" the gps... they have sdk's too.
http://www.navizon.com/fordevelopers.asp

the personal version has a tracking feature that you can customize how often it "updates" your location.. I believe with the sdk or the commercial verions you should be able to have it track movement every say 30sec, but only transmit the data every ??often.
