Compass Error with Mango? Maybe phone specific?

OK, I read a couple of posts before about the Compass error but cannot find them again. It apparently isn't that big of a deal for most but it bothers me. Now, this is the first time I've had a phone that actually has a compass feature on it so I don't have much to go on. My Arrive thinks that North is actually East. I don't know if this was an issues before or after Mango. Or, if it's actually an HTC issue. When I tried Googling the problem, I saw a lot of thread in the Android forums about this so I was wondering if it's something HTC needs to fix or is it something that was messed up from the beginning.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
