Screen black when closed... ?

I've had two Titans (USCC) and am having an odd problem that I suspect I may know what it is, but need help even if it is...
I recently unlocked my Titan and upgraded the ROM and radio to gps compatible, thanks to the guides here and at XDA (y'all rock! ), but my problems started before that and were not solved by it. In fact, they've only gotten worse.
My LCD is black when my keyboard is closed. The backlight is on, all LEDs buttons and lights work, and the touch screen works, but the screen is gray/black. At first, the display would just 'hang' when I closed the keyboard, then I had to reopen and closed the keyboard a few times to get the display to unfreeze. It started going black on occasion, and gotten worse and worse to the point that the screen will no longer display anything but black unless I start the phone with the keyboard open. If I do start the phone with the keyboard closed now, I have to take out the battery or let it finish booting completely , open the keyboard, and hit the hard reset combo and hit X or soft reset button to reboot. Hitting the hard reset combo during the boot doesn't even work, the screen still stays black.
The rotate screen command (software or mapped to a button) still works fine, and did with the kb closed before it quit completely like that. The problem seems to be with the physical position of the keyboard.
My thought is one or more bad wires in the ribbon, but I can't seem to get either section of the phone apart or separate them, even after all visible screws are removed. This one I have now is apparently refurbished, as it was a replacement for my first one that was physically damaged, and two screws under the battery cover seem to be missing(?!)
Are there any other suggestions of what might cause this problem? I would like to fix this asap, as it seems to be getting worse, and starting to freeze the display even with the kb open once in a great while. :-/
