Folders for applications rather than all of them on a single page?

In Android. Or at least the stock ROM (rooted) is there a way to add folders in the list of applications and put the applications in those folders? I hate the way I have to scroll EVERY SINGLE APPLICATION to get to the one I want.

Conversely, is there a way to increase the number of veritical applications shown or reduce the spacing between them to show more per line?

If you're on sense, launcherpro, or adw, then no. If you want to use the launcher Tag Home: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.stain46.taghome, it's highly customizable and has the features I think you're looking for. To be honest, I have not tried this one out though.

Re: Folders for applications rather than all of them on a single page?

This is excellent and thank you but I think this is an entire launcher for home. I use LauncherPro Beta and I don't want to have to replace that.

I do very much appreciate the suggestion though.

Re: Folders for applications rather than all of them on a single page?

Android does have basic folders built in to the existing UI and it is present using Sense as well.

Use the Add button on the home screen, and then select Folder > New Folder. Then you can drag items into that folder.

The apps in the folder are always in the same order in which you added them, i.e. there is no way to sort alphabetically.

There is an app in the market called FolderOrganizer that makes this process a lot easier.

Re: Folders for applications rather than all of them on a single page?

I just added folders, renamed them and dragged my apps into them, makes for a tidy home screen, nicely arranged and easy access to what I am looking for.
