What's with the proprietary power cable?

How can a phone still have a proprietary data/power jack? Especially when it uses a USB cable? I have looked for a longer cord for my fiance's new Eris, and all I see are mini-USB cables, but the port on the phone is not a mini-USB. Have you guys seen any longer, aftermarket cables for the Eris?

It IS mini usb. It is semi-proprietary, so htc can make their own cables, but mini usb cables also work

Thanks for all the input guys. Found a spare miniUSB cable from a friend. Works like a charm!
