Unhappy GPS sch-910

Can anyone tell me why, when using the gps feature on samsung ominia sch-910 it goes thru the phone com port and baud rate? Why doesn't the gps work like a tom tom or garmin without a phone connection? Also when using the gps feature cause it goes thru the phone am I getting charged for it? I do not have Verizon VZnavigation.
Any explanation wouild be helpful, thanks, Sam910

Re: GPS sch-910

no you don't get charged for it. I don't think you even need the phones radio to be on.
the gps is built into the phone. you should be able to use it on a non activated phone.
what rom are you using?

Unhappy Re: GPS sch-910

Rom CF03.2096 If I deactivate the phone I loose the gps on google maps a a golf program called freecaddie. I also have to have gps set to com port 08 and baud rate 57600 to work, which seems like it goes thru the phone setup...

Re: GPS sch-910

the GPS is built into the phone radio, so it has to be on to work. it's not an independent GPS. I'm not sure if it still works if the phone isn't activated with a provider tho - I've been meaning to try this on my old xv6800.

Re: GPS sch-910

I have been using Garmin on my unactivated i910 for 3 weeks now. Yes, the phone radio has to be on.

I deactivated my i910 about 9 months ago because I was unhappy with the browser function... I see that there are ROM flash updates available for verizon network... couple o questions...

1) can I update the ROM without activating the phone to see how the GPS works.

2) If I can update the ROM of the un-activated phone which CAB/Kitchen would you suggest?

3) how do I update the ROM?

Thanks in Advance - DJC

Re: GPS sch-910

Question 1&3. Yes you can update the rom to CF03 if it isn't already. Follow step 1 in this post by Lioryte.
forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=103190

(I see now you need to have a post count of 10+ to use links, sorry copy and paste it)

2. You don't need to install a custom rom for GPS to work. I am using WM7 Black and Blue Windows Phone 6.5 ROM 23064 build Final. For GPS software, I would look to others in the forum to help - there is one thread here on the subject.
