AT&T: MediaMax versus full PDA plan?

Looking at my options at AT&T, and I can get the full-unlimited dumbphone plan for $135, or the smartphone version for $150.

My brother has his smartphones on the dumbphone internet plans, it it works fine. He claims that all you get with the more expensive plan is an external IP, versus having AT&T's NAT giving you an internal one.

I don't think that would ever make a difference for my (or most people's) use...

What say you? Doesn't seem worth the price to go with the official plan. I will be using an unlocked phone anyhow.
