The Root does nothing but allow for "superuser access" the last free version of wifi-tether would only do an Ad-Hoc connection which is fine for most people.

but, those with Wii, PSP, PS3, and others that need a true AP mode (infrastructure), this was your solution.

My understanding there will never be this function on an un-rooted phone unless you pay for the Sprint WiFi hotspot, at 30 bux a month. They locked the feature out in the core somehow, unless you are rooted.
