What is the purpose of Slide2Unlock?

I know that Slide2Unlock looks really neat but my question is exactly what does it do? I tried to google and find out exactly what this program does but have not been able to find anything.

What does this actually do to and for your phone? What is it's functionality?

I got this from the first link returned when I searched slide2unlock on Google.
