Google Voice opens up existing number

For those of you who have not read this yet: http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/...ng-number.html

This is awesome but before I do anything just want to make sure this is compatable with Sprint. I know a while back when I wanted to get visual voicemail that sprint would charge you for forwarding the calls. Anyone know if this is the same deal?

I'm gonna guess if you do it like that your voicemails would have to be forwarded to google instead.. in which case Sprint would still charge. Why not just get a seperate google voice number and forward the calls & texts to your existing number? You wouldnt have to worry about it then as it would automatically send your voicemails as texts to your phone.

Yep. I tried this out (I'm on Sprint). I looked at my account online and I have $0.40 for call forwarding..... I think Sprint is one of the only carriers that still charge for call forwarding.

Not sure if Verizon is like this, or not, but I think Alltel used to charge for the minutes a caller used after the "No Answer Forward".

I have a lot of friends and family who want to call my Verizon number since it's "in network" and unlimited mobile-to-mobile minutes are used, but I would MUCH rather use Google Voice's voicemail as I could have all voicemail recorded and transcribed and synced to my Diamond via Gmail sync.

I have been using the GV calling card to call my Verizon voicemail via my MyCircle GV number as they charge minutes while checking your own voicemail (I'm on the cheap 500 anytime minute plan, shared with wife). This takes a long time via iDialer and is a pain to type in my code all the time (Suppose I could try to code it in to iDialer, but probably not entirely effective as it's dependent on my ignoring the call and my Verizon voicemail picking up at the right time.)

Anyway, that's the info I have. I would love to hear news if Verizon doesn't charge minutes for no-answer forwarding!

During a keynote address at the 2009 Open Developer Conference on 10/27/09, Steve Elfman, president-Network Operations & Wholesale outlined the Sprint Open approach that strengthens our relationship with consumers and application developers.
Sprint applauds the innovation that application developers have shown in creating a number of voicemail and messaging services that take advantage of call forwarding capabilities.
Sprint is proud to promote access to the new voicemail feature in Google Voiceâ„¢ to deliver an even richer experience to customers.
Why you need to know it:
To enhance our customers’ ability to access these services, including Google Voice™ , starting 11/8/09, all Sprint price plans will include free conditional (no answer/busy) call forwarding (*73,*74,*28).
No action is required by the customer. Unconditional (immediate) call forwarding (*72) will remain $0.20/minute.
Simply Everything customers will also begin receiving unconditional call forwarding (immediate) included in their plan beginning late November. Additional information will be available soon. Taken from a Sprint memo emp's recieve.
