remote desktop question!!!! please help,!!!!
 

Ok got a few questions bout remote desktop...( im new to it )

Ok here is the deal..I have my acer netbook running xp home. at my mothers house 11 miles away..its currently dl'ing torrents.. <-----just some tv shows and such i like.. and the 2 macgyver movies.lol anyway is there a way to say log into to my acer from my diamond and check the status of my torrents etc.. using remote desktop? and if so anyone have a simple guide on how to do this..?

Well, there's apps such as MyMobiler or LogMeIn that will allow remote log in. Is that what you're looking for?

logmein works but its not free..

ive searched hi and low. and looks like im gonna have to buy logmein unless anyone has more ideas?

if you were running xp pro i know theres a way you can do it through windows mobile remote desktop but there would be certian permissions youd have to set. im not too sure off hand if/how to do so through xp home... prolly not too much help but its a strt. hopefully someone can chime in on how to do this since i forgot how and am not currently on my home pc to see how mine is set up.

You can use the logmein free version. Just add the computer that you would like to control in your "My Computers" Then from your PPC, make sure you use Internet Explorer to go to logmein.com, login to your account and control the computer that you'd like. Much better solution than Remote Desktop because you don't need to know what the IP is for the computer that you would like to access (which is a problem because the IP gets allocated dynamically in the residential internet plans)

im bout to make the trip to my mothers house..to switch to the free version on my acer..with this program i can check or modify my torrents.. all from my home laptop..

1. On the PC, go to http://whatismyip.com - this will tell you your local IP
2. One the PC - Open a Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig' - this will tell you your IP on your router
3. Login to your router on the PC (probably 192.168.1.1)
4. Open a port for the laptop (like, 3000)
5. On the phone use Remote Desktop - for the PC name type the IP and add :3000 so it should read: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:3000 where the X's are your IP

That should be all you need!
