New Google Maps Build 3.0.1.4 w/ fixed background updating
 

A new version of google maps was posted yesterday - it's suppose to fix background updating. I just got done installing it, I will report back and let you guys know if it is fixed or not. It's even suppose to restart background updating if your phone dies or restarts. We will see

• Background location updates: Google Latitude background location updating has been fixed and allows you to continue updating your location automatically in the background even when Maps for mobile is closed.
  • To enable this, choose to exit Maps from its main menu and when prompted, select 'Yes' to continue background location updates.
  • When in background location update mode, Latitude will default to cell ID (cell tower) location detection to preserve battery life. WiFi or GPS detection will not be available in background mode.
  • Note: you may receive a limited number of installation reminders.
• Auto-restart location updates: If you turn off your phone or it ran out of battery with automatic Latitude location updates enabled either in the background (see above) or with Maps left open, Latitude will respect this choice and automatically restart location updates in background mode when you next turn on your phone.
• Force location updates: Manually refreshing your Latitude friends list also forces the update of your own location if automatic detection is enabled.
• Login errors: Several fixes completed to address multiple causes of login errors for Latitude, such as invalid certificates.
• Backlight behavior: Your device backlight should turn off according to your system settings when Maps or Latitude is left open in the background. Previously, Latitude may have kept your backlight on when in the background.
• Internal error: Selecting a friend in Latitude to see more info and options will no longer cause internal errors on some devices.

can someone please cab the up for me....for some reason i can never get to the download part when using my phone....get some kind of t30 error from google about my browser

Awesome, this is why i can't stay away from this site, because i would have never known there was a new version (unless it was in someones rom) let alone, the bug fixes. I can't wait to try this.

How is this on battery life? I mean, always uploading something to google has to hurt a little bit doesn't it?

im sure it destorys battery life. i only use gps when im connected to the car charger, but just by design it cant be kind to our batteries

I only use it when I need it. then close it when Im done with it. Doesnt hurt your battery much if you only use it when needed.

This new version is supposed to pull location from cell towers while running in background. Does this work for anyone on sprint?

i installed this on my wifes touch and on my TP (sprint). i opened it up on her phone and got a gps lock then checked my TP and it picked her up (we were both at home at the time). i closed the app and said yes when it asked to continue using latitude when off. she then went shopping and i tried to track her but it did not work, still said she was home. what am i doing wrong?

For some reason, with Sprint it will only work when using GPS. It doesn't work using Cell towers. You can tell when you click on the Blue square on the lower right corner.
