Turbo GPS is great, and I think it is free.

You'll have to be moving to get direction using the gps built into your phone, regardless of the app. There's no other way to get the direction with your phone unless you tape a real compass onto it. I guess you can always run 20-30 feet to find out what direction you're going :).
