Yesh! Slingplayer update! Now supports VGA!

Trying to keep up with the ever changing landscape of mobile devices, Sling Media has let loose an updated version of SlingPlayer Mobile for Pocket PC and Smartphone. This isn't the major re-write of the app that Sling Media has been hinting about in certain discussions here in the community, but instead an interim update to bring some Sling goodness to the swarm of new handsets that have recently hit the market sporting never-before-seen screen resolutions like 800x480, 640x480, 400x240, and 320x320.

So which new devices should SlingPlayer Mobile now support? The list is long, but includes:

* Sprint Treo 800w (US)
* Sony Ericsson X1 (US & UK)
* Palm Treo Pro (US & UK)
* Sprint HTC Touch Diamond (US)
* Sprint HTC Touch Pro (US)
* Verizon HTC Touch Pro (US)
* Verizon Samsung Saga (US)
* Verizon Samsung Omnia (US)
* AT&T LG Incite (US & UK)
* AT&T HTC Fuze (US & UK)
* AT&T Samsung Epix (US & UK)
* HP iPAQ 910 (US & UK)
* AT&T Pantech Duo (US)
* Sprint Samsung ACE (US)
* Verizon XV6900 (US)

Beyond support for additional devices, SlingPlayer Mobile is also getting a slew of other important enhancements:

* Provided you install SlingPlayer Mobile using the .EXE file, it will once again sync Slingbox information between SlingPlayer 2.0 and SlingPlayer Mobile.

* SlingPlayer Mobile can now perform major/minor tuning, which is often seen for those tuning digital broadcast channels (5.2, 5.3, etc.).

* The new SlingPlayer Mobile also includes a roaming notification feature, which will let you know if your phone switches to roaming mode while streaming.

* Updated channel logos.

Some important things to note:

Many new devices, particulary CDMA HTC phones like the Sprint Touch Diamond, Mogul, Verizon Samsung Saga, should use the GDI rendering mode provided in the SlingPlayer options area. These devices will default to GDI on a new install, but won't turn on if upgrading from an install where this wasn't already selected. Be sure to try both rendering modes on your phone to determine which will work better for you.

If your phone uses an accelerometer to switch between portrait and landscape, you should connect in portrait mode before switching to landscape, and once connected, use the accelerometer to switch between modes. According to Sling, these devices came out too late to target them in this version, but using the guidelines above, all should be well.

Finally, devices that use a 240x400 resolutionmay have some screens display a little strangely, but video streaming should work fine.

I would love to see how good this looks on the TP screen? How much bandwidth is needed for a steady stream for the higher resolution. Thanks in advance

Am I missing something? I've been using slingbox on my touch pro since day one... so what's the big fuss about it just now supporting our devices?? Plays exactly the same w/ the update on my Pro...

The Touch Pro is just now officially supported.

The MAX resolution is still 320 x 240.

They are just stretching the picture and filling the screen correctly.

I read somewhere that Sling 2.0 *might* have higher resoltions....But I beleive we are limited by the phone's internal stuff not running smooth.

Unless I'm doing something wrong I'm pretty dissapointed.. I upgraded to a Diamond from the Touch and have seen no improvement slinging as far as speed.. still doesn't run very smooth.. I know the evdo/3g is fast enough cuz I can tether to my laptop and run slingplayer with great results.. So I can only conclude that are hardware just isn't up to snuff.. don't get me wrong.. it does work barely ok.. but it's just kinda annoying to use.. I'd appreciate any input on others with the Diamond and sprint/evdo to share your settings.. maybe I'm just doing something wrong.

looks like crap at 320x240, high action settings, very pixelated and choppy.

imma muck with the settings and see what i can do for better picture quality
anyone feel free to throw out some tweaks or tips

i know for a fact slingplayer was awesome, fluid and clear on my old vogue/evdo setup

Besides your upload speed, one of the major factors of getting and keeping a good picture using slingmobile is your reception strength. At certain parts of my home i get a weak signal and i get choppy results, while at work and my girls house both areas are surrounded by reception towers and i get zero interuptions. these are my settings:

Buffer settings:Automatic
optimization:Enable Slingstream Optimizer,Enable fast start
Encoding Parameters: (i dont enable slingstream optimization), Video bitrate is set at 300, Video FPS is set at Full Rate, I-Frame interval is set at 5, Video Resolution is set at 320x240
Audio Settings:Stereo High
Information: (i dont enable control mode), show statistics
Other: I reconnect to last slingbox, (i dont enable "x" on slingplayer, I dont enable Audio Video Sync Offset) I enable GDI Rendering.

hope this helps...

thanks for the setting tips...
I'll give them a try. also maybe I'll try buffering more than the default 4 seconds.

I've used wifi with my diamond using Comcast .. with 12mb down and 2mb up.. so bandwidth isn't an issue.. works flawless on my laptop. Terrible framerate and sync'ing issues on my Diamond.. Sprintv works like crap also... maybe it's the rom I'm using.. Mightymike's 3.8 ... maybe I'll try loading the stock rom back on and give it a try before I completely frustrate myself.

Worked much better on my mogul then it does on touch pro!

Re: Yesh! Slingplayer update! Now supports VGA!

OK... I HATE this update. They changed which way the landscape mode is viewed. I have the perfect setup to watch games in my car and run it through the car speakers. Now... I can't really do that, because plug is now on the wrong side. I can't see any improvement in viewing either... time to switch back.

Anyone overwhelmed by the TP viewing? I'm waiting for a replacement for my Mogul, but have heard Sling isn't so impressive on TP.

dedicated server pc running orb has always worked great for me

Re: Yesh! Slingplayer update! Now supports VGA!

Rather than start a new thread, I figured I'd pull this one back up.

I just purchsed a Slingbox Pro HD and while it works great on my PC/Laptop, on my Touch Pro it leaves a LOT to be desired. After playing with the setting, I am able to get a good somewhat stutter free picture in portrait mode(I get get 25-30fps with 300 bitrate, 5 iframe full fps). However, changing over to landscape is another story. The stuttering becomes really bad in landscape mode. SO bad, it is pretty much unwatchable.

I'm actually considering taking it back because my main objective was to replace Sprint TV with this, which would save me money, in the long run, while giving me a TON more channels to choose from. But to be honest, at this point, the slingplayer just doesn't cut it at ALL on the Touch Pro.

As an FYI, I am using v1.6.012 of the player(as opposed to 1.6.011 release version), which is a leaked version that is supposed to help video clarity.

Care to share the v1.6.012 you have??

I have a Diamond, and if I leave my settings on automatic high, the landscape looks just fine, no choppyness.

Figured I'd give that version a shot because I was disappointed with what I was seeing and when the person posted it, they said it helped the video.

Are you running with the Pro HD and if so is there anything else special you may have done? I ask because my internet connection should be able to handle this(16mbps/2mbps, real world tests were very close to those numbers too) and I'm sitting here at 4-5 full bars of 3G signal yet my landscape is terrible.

I'm running with MightyROM 4.10 and have tried with and without the ATI diamond driver(wasn't sure if MightyROM included this or not).

lawmangrant 02-20-2009 06:17 PM

Re: Yesh! Slingplayer update! Now supports VGA!

I am running a Calcu rom that I cooked with his kitchen, and from there, I am using the 3d drivers included in the rom.

I set it to the HIGH mode, and it works just fine for me. The initial buffering takes a little longer, but the picture looks good in the landscape mode.

And yes, I have a Pro HD connected via component cables. I also run a Slingbox Classic as well.

Re: Yesh! Slingplayer update! Now supports VGA!

If you buy one from amazon you can return it without having to pay any restocking fee or return shipping. That way you can see how well it would work with your cable box and internet connection.

Re: Yesh! Slingplayer update! Now supports VGA!

There's a new version out, 1.6.0.114. Will try it out and report back.

All I can say is wow. Keep in mind that the old version was working pretty well for me, but this version seems to be 10X better. I have had 500+Kbps (sometimes over 630) and 15+fps constantly for the past 20 minutes. This is with a good signal, not a great one. I will keep playing with this and report any issues, but so far, so good.
