IM app with SMS
 

I've found some writeups on a few nice IM programs but each one I read about seems to always use the data plan.

I have unlimited SMS and would like to find one that would allow me to connect to Yahoo and AIM (or Yahoo pref if I can't get both) that works off of SMS messaging.

I have unlimited data as well but would like to save the battery by using one based on SMS since I have unlimited of both.

i want the same app that u want. one thats just like the sidekicks messengers. even cingular n i thmobile has one on their ppc phones.

Hmmm...I don't think you're going to find anything like that.

You can probably make some simple adjustments to your device to help with battery use (depending on what other programs/apps you have on it).

SMS is not a "connection program" to speak of...it's merely a form of communication.

There is an AIM app floating around in the software forum that is pretty easy on battery use.

The only commerical IM program that had SMS-relay was Verichat (that is, it was a hybrid: your IM app went into SMS mode in standby. When an IM message came in, it was via SMS. If you wanted to have the IM chat, it went direct-connect. Best of both worlds, as SMS for pure IM can be unreliable).

Blame Nokia for buying them and killing the app.

Octro gets the best battery life (see pocketpc mags IM bible by mennisys, which compares everything in all IM apps).

I suggest emailng Octro asking for SMS support. They are aware of the request (I asked for it when they first started) but showing that people who are willing to pay for a program that does SMS-relay may get them to try and implement such a method.

My first post (welcome a noob), is there a list somewhere for IM apps that use only data (not sms). I have a 700wx on Verizon.

Palringo is a good one. We tend to use that a lot. I uses voice and text via data and not sms.

No IM programs use SMS, Verichat had the option of you being contacted via SMS if you were not connected. All the major IM companies are aware we all want this option, will have to wait and see who can come through with it.

how do u set up palringo to go on AIM? i tried doing it and could not figure it out.

Currently Palringo is a stand-alone app. It will not interface with other chat programs....yet.
