Re: Turn by Turn GPS

I believe amAze is the only free app that gives spoken turn by turn directions & automatically recalculates the route if you make a wrong turn.

amAze is an awesome program, it also will give you a live weather condition report for any selected map location (not just your current location). The 3D maps in it suck, but the 2D maps are beautiful.

Google maps will give turn by turn also, but they are not spoken directions & it won't recalculate automatically either (although it is awfully cool to watch your location on a satellite map)

There is another google version called "google navigator". It is not free, but I bought it some time ago. About the only thing good I can say about GN is it gives perfect high def street level views of most locations. Other than that, it is a buggy POS (& I've tried it in 4 different phones) & I would definitely NOT advise anybody to buy it.

With amAze, are the maps stored on your device or are they downloaded like in Google Maps?

Downloaded, you need an unlimited data plan to use it.

I use a lot of different GPS programs, the only one I have that gives turn by turn spoken directions & doesn't need a data plan is CoPilot Live 7. That is an awesome program, but it's definitely not free........

Thanks. I have unlimited data. I am still using the 1 gig micro sd card that came with it. Didn't know if I needed to buy a new one to hold maps if they were stored on the device.

There's a couple of other threads about Amaze on here. One of the fun things about it is that you can easily replace the icons & sounds the program uses with ones you create. So, you could have your wife or kid telling you to turn left in 800 feet. Pretty neat.

Even though I really like the program, I'm not too crazy about it. The worst thing is that it sometimes has a hard time finding addresses. For some stupid reason, it can't even find my house, my work, or half of the destinations I put in. The program also will give you alternatives if it can't find the address... so you have to be careful when choosing these or you'll end up on the other side of the town.

I actually use Microsoft's "Live" more than Google or Amaze (I have all three on my phone.) It simply has more options and features than Google, is more reliable in my area, and can find just about anything. While the Amaze concept is great, it just isn't ready to be THE GPS program you depend on.

If & when Live gets voice prompts, Amaze will be deleted from the phone...

i love amazegps too..BUT what I dont like abt it is....it loads up at startup (doesnt show in ur ctrl pannel as running) but if u go to ur windows/startup folder...u will see it. That in turn drains battery when not used.

My advice...use it when reqd...then make sure it is not idling away in startup folder.

hope that helps.

These aren't free.

Live Search is another good alternative. I use Live Search instead of Google Maps.

I also use AmazeGPS and like it quite a lot, but I do not know what you are talking about it loading at startup. I do not and never have had a link in my startup folder that loads AmazeGPS at startup. I just used it for a 300 mile trip and it worked quite well. I hade problems with maps not getting downloaded in a few areas, but otherwise, it stayed right on track. Even in 3D mode.

I wondered about that myself, it has never loaded at startup in my system either.

I mean...using FILE EXPLORE ...go to windows/startup folder and check....most of the times after a reboot, it sits there...and I just delete it. It doesnt show on the system tray tho.

I found the same in my startup folder after I installed the app. I deleted the shortcut and haven't seen in back since.

Live Search does not have accurate info. Google Maps seems to be more accurate in my region. I was looking for a place a co-worker of mine thought was still open but hadn't been to in over a year. I took her word for it and searched for the place by name using Live Search. According to Live Search, the place was still located at the place my co-worker said it was at, so I went. When I get there, I find that the establishment that I had been looking forward to going to had been shut down over 11 months ago. It is now a vet's office. I've had the same issue with finding other places. Until the boys at Microsoft actually show up to work and update their maps, I say stick with Google Maps or pay for Mapquest Navigator if you have a device that supports a standalone build.
