MapQuest Navigator 5.0

I have TomTom7. I hate it. It does not use correct speed limits when calculating fastest routes, resulting in routes that are actually slower than the true fastest route (I learned this the hard way while traveling in decent traffic to rule out traffic as a possible cause for timing issues). Are all of the navigation programs like that or are there any that are great representations of the speed limit conditions?

Also, does anyone know if Mapquest Navigator 5.0 is usable on the Sprint Touch without having to use external GPS following the July 21 update to the ROM that enabled the internal GPS? Seems like a decent app. I like that over the course of a year (if you pay 49.99 upfront), it's cheaper than Sprint Nav, even though it's subscription based, which I understand is a turn-off to some.

I got a call back from MapQuest. They are working on a new build of MapQuest Navigator of the software for "standalone" use on the Sprint Touch that is to be available in 2-3 weeks. For now, you would have to get the external GPS device.

with the new simply everything plans and 6.1 on the touch you get telenav navigation included. which actually works very nicely even when you travel thru the sprint network and a roaming network.

Thanks for the info. But right now, I need to save $$$. $99 per month is a lot for me. Right now, with my business discount, I pay about $50 per month.

I didn't realize you get unlimited navigation as well... inteerrrreessttingg... I might have to switch....

I just don't know if it is worth the switch, since right now I am getting 550 minutes, and unlimited data/text/pic for $55+tep+tax=$70/month

The simply unlimited would make it more like $120... almost double...

I used this exclusively on my Mogul on a vacation to Hawaii, and it works VERY well, had no problems the entire time, very accurate, tons of POI's...awesome software.

I like what I saw when I just ran a demo. It's nice to see. Google and Live should try to compete with a real navigation software. Right now, I'm not going to use MapQuest's because to use it on the Touch you have to have the external GPS device. I already bought the phone cash. Not spending anymore loot on more devices when the internal GPS is now enabled. They did say they are releasing a new build in a few weeks that should be able to be used on the Touch's internal GPS.

I still don't see why you would need the external GPS... The internal GPS shows up as a true port, just like external... As long as you set it in Windows...

I agree 100% that the internal GPS should show up within the program when the program is running, or so I thought it should at first, but it doesn't in the current Touch build because the current build is not programmed to look for a built-in receiver, it only searches for a bluetooth external receiver. I confirmed this over the phone with a MapQuest tech rep. All the builds they have that are advertised as "requires external GPS" are not able to utilize any of those device's internal GPS architecture if they have it built in at this time. He said a new build for the Touch should be released in a few weeks that does utilize the internal GPS, so that'll be nice to see. I like the app, though, that which I was able to try, at least. It is very user-friendly. I couldn't test it using GPS, but it does well checking traffic and POI's (it has A LOT!!!) ... I'll just wait to see how well it does when it is enabled to use the internal GPS ... I'll waddle along with the free TomTom I was able to "find" for now.

For those of you that used programs such as TomTom and Mapquest...do you get charged the $9.99 a month like the do for the Telenav (I also don't have the everything plan). If I get one of these turn by turn programs elsewhere, does Sprint charge me as well???
Thanks

I recently found that Google have a navigation program that is different from Google Maps, the cost is $59.00 though but it works really good accurate speeds voice turn by turn, street views etc,.

If you mean Google Navigator, that's a piggyback program. It's not a genuinely Google-developed app, but somehow, it's marketed that way. It's developed by the people at PDAfun.net.

Re: MapQuest Navigator 5.0

You are correct it's not developed by google, but it works great using google technology
