That is the best app for it...even works with WM 6.1

Just reaffirming what geekcop said. Dashwire lets you back up all text messages without a max limit, interact with them in a threaded view, and easily search through them. You can also send text messages when you're on your computer through your phone.

Someone posted the XDA link above. I like the dotfred page because he also releases updates for Start Menu service which adds a bunch of useful features to the SM.
