There is a download button on the page that I provided the link to. The button is entiltled v3.4 technical preview download. Also Schettj has provided a link as-well
thx, am DL now and will see how well/fast it functions.
it is a slow piece of software and it displays fonts horrible bad. The Opera (though it is only a trial) is a much better piece of software for internet exploring.
I always found Netfront to be a real memory hog.
yep, crappy slow on my touch. took FOREVER to load a page. and the zoom is crap. im patiently waiting for Opera Mobile 9
Aside from Opera, the only other browser that I'm very impressed with is Picsel. I wish they would produce a finished, polished release of it. It is the most Safari-like browser I've seen/used for WM...
I know some people don't like it, but I'm hooked on Thunderbird. Expensive, but it looks closest to a real PC to me.
Catman do u have a link to this. I looked around and all I found was mozilla thunderbird email client
yup I second the post above mine. no luck locating this file. please point us in the right direction?

ah your right my bad, I should of read better. Thunderhawk looks interesting, but who wants to pay $50 a year for a web browser that doesn't even support tabs and hasn't been updated since March of 2005.
After reading a little on this it looks impressive, but the cost does suck.
50.00 if you buy the whole year, 5.00 per month and no trial available I could find. Seems like its an AOL type of thing which is how and why they charge. They process all the pages so they are optimized for the mobile phone. Want to try, but damn thats pricey http://www.mobiletechreview.com/soft...hunderhawk.htm text from article above How is this done? I asked Sampo Kaasila just that question. I imagined that ThunderHawk proxy servers act as a middle-man, reformating the content to make it suitable for Pocket PC screen then sending it out to your device. Here's the definitve word from Sampo: "We do rely on an array of ThunderHawk content adaptation servers acting as proxies. These servers have a very fast Internet connection so they are able to download all the HTML and images fast. They do not strip out content, instead they do all the heavy weigh lifting (page layout with font substitution) on the server and the actual page content is then transmitted in a compacted format to the PDA. A key thought behind what we do is that we are trying to preserve the content and desk-top experience on the wireless device" |
F it I will try it out on my touch for a month and see who it goes and if its work it.
Sorry, didn't get to get back here till now.
Yes, it ain't cheap, but of all the browsers, Thunderhawk is absolutely the closest to looking at a real desk top. I bought Opera 8.65, not as good. Had Netfront a few years back, mem hog and not as good, wouldn't touch Minimo with a ten foot pole after all the problems I've read about it everywhere. Was not going to spend the money again this year, and realized, I can't do without it, so I did. Oops, sorry I just read my original post, where I said Thunderbird! I keep mixing the names up... |
Well I was at first really disapointed, but after playing with it, it does have some nice things about it. Going to keep playing with it, picsel, the new netfont, and opera mini to see if one pulls away. Each have some pluses but this is visually probally the easiest interface
I was a bit Thawk fan a few years back, it really did render a nice looking page. Navigation sucked but the view was great.
Catman, you have a 6700, right? Is it WM 5 or 6? Has anyone tried Thunderhawk on a WM6 device like the Mogul? |
I have the cooked WM 6 rom on my 6700 and Thawk is working perfectly.
I simply don't understand the lack of a good browser on WM. It's been an ongoing problem for YEARS. I don't know anyone who's realy satisfied with any of the options currently available. Yes, Opera Mini is nice, but it has its own set of problems. WHY hasn't a developer stepped up and made a kick-ass browser? Is there some technical aspect of WM that prevents a good browsing experience? It's ridiculous that in (almost) 2008 our options are bad and worse. Thoughts?

People are considering Thunderhawk....?
Hell must've frozen over, so much was missing from it back in 2005 & I don't think its any better now. Quote:

i'm a college student and a lot my friends have iphones; I'm "the loser" with "that ugly windows mobile BRICK." No, it doesnt matter to them that my phone is my GPS in my car - no, it doesnt matter that i have uber control over how my OS looks and operates with ROM updates and the myriad of programs able to customize WM - no, it doesnt matter that my slide out keyboard is so much slicker than their cumbersome onscreen keyboard...for all these iPhoners ALL THAT MATTERS IS THE BROWSER!
so i've been searching for a competitor to their slick, gesture-ific browser. I've tried all the contenders: PIE, Opera, Minimo, heck i even stole Deepfish off some shady website. Opera is clearly the best and has the richest featureset, but the pages still dont scale right regardless of what kind of options i select. I dont get that iPhone almost-like-a-pc-but-so-much-cooler snob factor. Then I found old posts through Google about Thunderhawk and decided to give it a try despite the 6 bucks for a one-month trial (i know that sucks in principle, but...really guys? im a broke student and i can afford trying it for a month!). I dont know when the last update to this program was (i thought i got a new PPC edition)...but if it WAS in 2005 then i APPLAUD their designers!!! This is THE BEST scaling i have seen on Windows Mobile! The browser is simply beautiful. The pages look like my desktop on EVERY website (minus a few font differences of course). AJAX elements look GREAT! The page elements are interactive (something the deepfish trial i had failed to do). Yes, there are some kinks with the slide out keyboard on my 6700...yes, it doesn't have tabs (do you REALLY multitask that much on your PPC that you need TABS?!?)... but the pages just look so sexy and render QUICK that i might actually stick with it! This really could compete with the iphone! Now, ask yourself, if this broke college kid is considering to pay 50 bucks a year for a stupid phone browser...there MUST be something worthwhile in this program. after all the disappointments i've had in this area, this is the first near-success i've had with a browser. On my phone, i'm no power user by any means...but for everyday googling, email checking, looking up addresses, etc (you know, what normal people would need internet on a phone for) i dare you to give it a try. sorry for the long post...just my .02 (and a little bit of venting, for which i apologize) |
I wrote to Bitstream requesting tabs for Thunderhawk, they said they would consider it for the next update.
Maybe if a few more wrote, it would really get them to take notice. |
