WM6 Internet Sharing without ActiveSync

The new 6800 uses Remote NDIS aka RNDIS which means you are no longer able to connect your phone and use it as a modem as you previously were(even though wmmodem.exe is still part of WM6). To use your data connection from the phone in XP it was thought you had to have ActiveSync at least installed. I was able to find a way around this. It takes about 1 minute.

When installing ActiveSync 4.5 it installs Windows XP Hotfix KB909394. This hotfix implements the rndis framework and support drivers. It's not available anywhere as a standalone download nor is it even mentioned on Microsoft's KB. I have successfully stripped this out of the executable after fighting with it for awhile.

Code:

1) Run update\update.exe (You do not need to restart, you can safely check the "Do not restart" box.
2) Start Internet Sharing on your phone, plug it in.
3) If prompted for drivers point it to the folders you extracted rndis_as45_drivers.zip to.

That's it. Below i've hosted the two files for the timebeing..

Download - Windows XP Hotfix kb909394
Download - ActiveSync RNDIS drivers

Note: From the signs I have gotten from installation logs it appears this hotfix will be included in SP3.

so what does this do exactly?

Edwood 11-30-2007 07:34 PM

Sweet. Thanks so much for stripping out the drivers and hotfix.

What do you mean by the "new" 6800? People have been using the 6800 as a modem for a long time now.

Edwood 12-03-2007 02:40 PM

Yeah, but you either have to pay for a program or install Activesync to use ICS and wait for it to sync every single time you plug in your 6800.

delawaresace 12-03-2007 02:57 PM

not for me. i dont run activesync and tether just fine using ICS.

You're tethering via ICS on a computer that you never installed activesync on? How? What OS are you using on your computer you're tethering with? And what connection method? USB? BT?

OMJ 12-03-2007 04:01 PM

I think what he meant was......if you start ICS 1st, then tether to your pc, Activesync will not go through the sync process, it just goes straight Internet sharing :)

Yeah, but suppose I want to tether with a different computer like a friend's laptop, and I'd rather not install activesync on their computer?

ICS without Activesync would be great.

i wonder with this ics if it will work the same on the new moto q9c as its built into the rom...and if so...will it run like the mogul and not incur a charge for data...

Activesync may be disabled, but it's still installed, yes activesync does not need to be running, but when it's installed the necessay drivers & such are installed to allow ICS to work.

this is my situation also. sorry if my earlier post was a little misleading. having said that though i could swear that i ran ics on my laptop before i installed acticesync. maybe i'm just not remembering right

Sorry I was MIA. You do NOT need activesync in any fashion to do this. It doesnt have to be installed at any time.

You simply run the update.exe I linked in OP, start internet sharing, plug in phone, use the supplied driver and thats it.

This is EXACTLY what the first post says and help to do. You do not need ActiveSync. Read the first post.

i think what the person is trying to say, is that if they went to a friends house that didnt have the internet, it would be nice to just sync up with bluetooth/usb and teather on the spot, unless you carried these files on the phone with you at all times. which for many im sure is an option, but i have a tiny 1GB card in my touch and that things almost full already :-p

Re: WM6 Internet Sharing without ActiveSync

Thanks a lot, i definitively do not want to install the whole Active Sync on a laptop with only 4Gb SSD disk (Asus EEE) !

My PPC is syncronized over the air with an Exchange server, i do not need activesync, i just use it on another computer to install apps because many of them are not available as .cab.

I confirm that with XP SP3 i've only installed the RNDIS drivers without the hotfix, it should be included with SP3.
