can I save the working file to a memory card and then change the point to location to the storage card so that this works across flashes?

Yes, you can. It's under Preferences. When you change the Data Path, the app will ask if you want to move all of your current data to the new location. You can choose yes to move; otherwise your old data won't be loaded until you set the data location back to the old one.
