Adobe is a vital resource for a student. A lot of books are in kindle format and play perfectly on either adobe pdf or mobi pocket reader. I usually have to convert the files to a great reader friendly version (converting the pdf into sliced pngs, converting the png into a pdf and finally either keeping it in adobe format or converting it into prc for kindle friendly viewing - not that I have a kindle but that is an option)

TI emulator is also a must have...

Office suite (comes installed) is definitely best.

Some sites do have options for researching several databases. Iris browser is good to browse those databases. But if you want, opera 10 will also be really good.

For appointments and anything else, I use windows mobile. While not finger friendly (unless we venture into 6.5.x) it does get the job done very well and with sense 2.5, it is the completely perfect solution. As far as student friendly goes

you can browse webcasts.berkeley.edu
one reason why I suggest this is because it is a fantastic resource for students. Almost too good for science majors. This also means you need an rss viewer to download podcasts too...

maybe a voice recording application to record your lectures. But again I keep with most things found on either mighty, juicy, or nrgz roms.

Definitely test the waters but I highly recommend you get used to the applications. Often times (especially for recording) you have to start it ASAP

Hope this helps
