How to close programs for GOOD!

Well I was just wondering if there was a registry hack or something that I could do so that when I close a program out, that it PERMANENTLY closes it out and doesn't leave it in the running programs folder.

I want to do this to conserve my battery life and not have so many things running when all I needed to do was check something in a program.

Any help is appreciated.
