Need: VPN solution (WM6 client, D-Link server)
I've been struggling with this for some time, thus this post...
I've searched all the VPN threads on the various ppc sites, but i've found no discernable solution. I have a D-Link DI-824VUP wireless router that is capable of running a VPN server. I also have a network hard drive that functions as a media server. The main point of this setup is to use Pocket Player to browse music from home in a finger-friendly style (as opposed to Orb). Another advantage is that I can do all this without keeping a PC on at home (as opposed to Orb). My problem is that I have not been able to get the WM6 vpn client to successfully authenticate to my D-Link PPTP VPN server. I have tried switching on the L2TP server but I have not been able to find out how to create a certificate or PSK or any of that. At any rate, after much searching the PPC sites, I've heard that the WM6 pptp client will only successfully connect to a Microsoft PPTP server (like windows xp). I've somewhat confirmed this by successfully connecting to my D-Link VPN server from a desktop while tethered to my phone. This rules out the potential failure points of my vpn server and Sprint's network. Therefore, I've resigned to look for a third-party pptp solution. My problem here is that I cannot find one anywhere. All of the third-party VPN apps seem to fill needs that WM6 does not have. I figure since WM6 has a pptp client, no one has saw fit to create a very similar third party client. Does anyone know of a third party PPTP client, or of a beginner's guide to L2TP/IPSec, or if OpenVPN can be used with a non-OpenVPN server (i've been around their website and that is somewhat ambiguous), or anything else that can be of assistance? P.S. I'll never buy a windows mobile phone again. Every single small thing I've tried to do (related to advanced functionality I couldn't get on an iphone or whatnot) has been a giant battle... Maybe a palm device could connect to a non-microsoft pptp server... I did find a third party pptp client for palm! |
Re: Need: VPN solution (WM6 client, D-Link server)
Ive done this exact thing in the past with the 6700. You need a WINS server setup to use the client vpn built in to the rom. I do have some bad news though, the vpn throughput was way too slow to handle any kind of stream. You can use it for file transfer and secure RDP and stuff like that.
Hope this helps! |
