This How To will show you step by step how to create a cab file.

You can cab up anything you want to put on your phone in ANY directory...

Cab Manager Program
I use and recommend WinCE Cab Manager (Get it HERE)
it has a 30 day free trial and is $99 after that...

Getting Started

First you will need a file to cab. We will start with a basic single manila file.
i have attached one if you don't already have..
* Here you can simply add a document/picture to your my documents folder

Open WinCE Cab Manager

Enter Name's for Company and whatever cab your making

Just Click Next..

Just Click Next Again....

And now click finish...

Now this should be what you have. Displays all info for cab file

Now we need to add the files.
From windows explorer just click and drag the files right on top of Files...

Once you do that the following dialog box pops up...
Here you can change name or attributes

Click Location tab
Here you can choose what directory to put file(s) in. you can also add a new folder
Click Ok

Now back at main screen
Here you can "Allow Uninstall"
also you can Compress
I recommend compressing for files over a meg or two

From the menu click CABINET...PROPERTIES...
Here you can change ALL properties of cab file

Click OK...
Back at the Main Screen...
All left to do is review and Save

You can also add Shortcuts and make changes to the registry...

Now to Save...Choose location and SAVE!

As someone who taught themselves how to make cabs I HIGHLY recommend WinCE cab manager. I used it every single day of its free trial, deploying soon so haven't spent the 100 yet but plan to.

can I place an .exe file in the cab file that i make and have it work?
I use a spread sheet style exe program for doing weight and balance problems at work , it's specific to a bunch of freighters that we fly and i'd love to do this on my HTC TP2 rather than drag out my laptop in the ****pit.

no, the cab file basically just "puts" files wherever you want on the device...it could make a shortcut to startup to run a exe... but it wont make the program compatible with windows mobile, if thats what your asking.

I'm trying to make a cab to install my manila register.
I'm doing something wrong. I go to:

File/new/app info/device supported/select processor/finish.
That takes me to the:
Cab info page
flies
Registry

I go to registry/file/import/import from reg. It imports fine. Then I go to save as. It reminds me I have not added any files. I tell it OK. Name the cab. I tell it to save as WinCe *.cab *.hme or *.tsk

It makes a cab. The cab installs OK, but does not put in the edits. what am I doing wrong?

maybe a bad reg entry... try using a reg editor to look on device and see if the change is there.

If these are correct then it has to be may .reg file. I used CeReg Editor to save the regs to a .reg file. I was able to make a working cab from a .inf file I was given. How can I save reg edits in a .inf format?

If you are trying to export reg entries from your device to cab up, I use FDCsoft Task Manager and registry editor on the device to export the reg entries I want.

Then using WinCE Cab Manager, import the reg file into the cab and save the cab file. Works fine. Hope that helps.

Also wanted to mention another way.. Pocket controller pro is what i use.. you can view device registry on pc "live" ... i have found it much easier to view registry on pc... more room to view long entries...
you can also export straight from program.... export to .reg then import in wince...

But if anyone is just looking to make Cab's with register edits only, CeReg Editor 0.0.5.2 will make cab files very easily.

1. Make or locate the register edits you want to make into a cab file. Highlight it.

2. Click on Edit. Then go to Export as and save the edit.

3. Click on Conversion. Then Reg-> Cab Select the edit you just saved. It will ask you to name the cab

4. You are done. Your new Cab file is in the same directory as the exported file.

This is much easier than WinCe and its free...

This is it ladies and gentleman. Anyone want to make a cab follow this post. This is exactly how I do it, and I'm sure exactly how most people here do it. I tried a couple of "free" cab makers and they didn't work. WinCE cab manager is the best. Pay $99 or learn how to travel through time :-\" either way it's the most user friendly.

I just wish I had read this before so much trial and error.](*,) Anyone have any questions about anything, just ask. There are some serious pros around here.

Sweet thread !! thanks for all the info!!! BIGANDADAD - I have been making cabs for my TP2 for a while now and they have been working fine, until recently when i make a cab for custom task-bars, dialers or basically anything that involves replacing a system file in the windows dir, it will do one of 2 things.

1. just completely not install because it can not over write the roms (currently Energy.RHODCDMA.23566.Sense2.5.Cookie.HomeTab.May. 01 by the way, and I am always on NRG roms) default files that are already in the windows dir. at least thats what i think is happening !!!

or

2. it will copy the files that do not overwrite anything properly and then it will fail to copy the files the need to overwrite other files, it even says that the install was successful. but after a deeper look i find that the files did not get overwriting.

Before i used to make cabs like these and I would have no problems with files not overwriting. I have even been making my cabs the exact way you say to in post one for a real long time. Im really getting confused with this problem!!!

Is there anymore tips you could give me, or maybe any ideas on what i might be doing that is messing things up?? anything at all!!! lol thanks a lot for everything you do for our community !!!! thanks

yep sorry should have said that!! phcanOverbmp.dll, tapres.192.dll, shellres.192.dll, and so on. i have tried taking other ppls task-bar cabs that work and replace my files and that wont work ether. what it comes down to is i just have to copy the files that wont go in the cab with resco or total commander and they copy over no problem, no issues at all, thats why its really getting to me because if they copy over fine when i manually do it why wont it work in the cab ? lol know what i mean! other ppl's cabs work lol thanks for the quick response!!

are you sure they are signed correctly? you can check by viewing the txt produced by signing.

sorry it took so long to get back to you, i think the files are signed right because they work, they just dont copy over if there in a cab, i am using the signer.exe file not too sure on how current it is but the txt file says they are signed

i cant quite afford a copy of wince so I use quickcab 2.0 instead. the problem with this is that i cant see the manila file to add to my cab. any suggestions?

EDIT: nevermind. I found another post that said to use total commander to uncheck all file attributes before copying them over to pc.
