Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
This is my first thread, mainly out of frustration. I normally hate asking for help in a thread since i like to do the research myself, but i am stumped....
Update the rom via this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433957 Then installed windows live search and google maps, neither worked (yes all my settings are at com4, 4800 baud, windows manage, etc...) Then tried this thread: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...l+gps+easy+way Still didn't work with windows live search or google maps. Wouldn't even work with the "Alltel Nav" application that came with 6.1 Then attempted to use the Holux GPS Viewer v1.5, that automatically selects comm 4 as a way to "cold start" the gps chip. Didn't work. I'm completely out of idea, and ridiculously flustered right now. My room mate has an Sprint Touch, to which they came out with an official ROM (also which i told him about, he had NO idea about ROM updates), and he constantly uses his built in GPS and live search yada yada... and it drives me insane since i was the one that got it workin for him in the first place. Is there anything that i'm overlooking or any other methods that I haven't tried with this thing? I thought that when i took the plunge and used the "official" unofficial ROM update that my GPS would just magically work.... obviously it didn't.... Please help... Oh and I'm glad i finally joined the forum |
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
well as it says in that gps fix thread, that will activate gps on the only official rom- the one released back in april. there is a link directly to the rom that the whole thread is made for. as of this new rom that seems (to me atleast) official, just leaked, i dont know if those old cabs (which were made for the 6.0 rom, that didnt have gps) will work on this new 6.1 rom (which supposedly should have gps).
personally, i havent gotten gps to work yet, but all i have done is flash the new 6.1 rom and try to use google maps. i had gps on and agps as well on the old 6.0 and it worked good, but im not going to go in to my qpst and reg and all that yet until i know if thats what i need to do or not. |
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
interesting, i really like the speed of the avdo and i don't know if reverting back to an older rom for gps is worth losing that?
Alltel sucks... |
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
ok, btw i hard reset my phone. so now it is at the base wm6.1. I guess even hard resetting will not reset to the original ROM.
but i think i knew that anyways |
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
Did you go into settings/phone/location and enable location?
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
yep...

Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
agps uses a data connection to assist in determining location. It triagulates location through cell towers.
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
ahh gotcha. well hopefully my AGPS will start working...
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
I have alltel touch and mogul and I run custom roms on both of them. I got gps running on both of them. I got sick of waiting for alltel to release it's update.
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
AGPS is also regular GPS it stands for Assisted GPS as it gets some sat info over the data connection via the use of a server I know Sprint has one bc it locks in under 10 seconds. but the GPS works fine by turning all the radios off and only having GPS i can get a cold lock in about 2 min or less. There is also another GPS chip that is not as popular its something like EGPS for enhanced GPS. Pleas correct me on the EGPS...

Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
When you load Google Maps does it say Initializing GPS or Looking for/Seeking Satellites?
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
i reflashed to the basic 6.1 and now it at least says seeking, so i think its just a lack of satellite reception around my campus. i'm gunna try to figure out a way to to the shadow tech fix that you recommended once i can figure out how to do it exactly
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
Check your Location Setting too. It is turned off by default in the new ROM.
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
Same problem..my location setting is on and GPS is not working. Google maps says "seaking gps sats....etc."
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
Then if it is looking for the satellites it is enabled, but you need the aGPS fix in Shadow's thread. Try taking a brief walk outside for about 10 minutes or so in an area that is fairly open, such as a high school quarter mile track. Leave GPS running and see if it locks on. Check the Location Setting and the COM/Baud is set to COM4 / 4800. Which thread from XDA did you get your ROM?

Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
i updated & alltel nav works great even tells u how fast ur drivin...lol...plus google maps works without any other patches got locked on in less then 2 min & i have hardly any signel where i am!!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433957
this is the one i updated the rom on. i am getting the seeking satellites so i imagine it is just poor reception now. i just need to figure out where to download the QPST program so i can do shadowtech's stuff |
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
I couldn't get GPS to work at all until I *228 option 3..now it works fine with NO fixes or other downloads / installs.
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
the 6.1 rom comes with the gps already enabled. you dont need to enable it. you need to do the agps fix.

Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
Do a search for the QPST gpsOne information. Did this for my friends 6800 and GPS finally works, after a year.....
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
alright, i did the shadow tech fix. my satellites do still say seeking forever but no luck on getting a lock. pretty certain its now just a matter of finding a location where it can lock. i'm in my dorm so i'll wait till i get out on the streets to see if it works
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
You didn't do it right. Is your Location Setting set to on? I'm just double checking.
|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
i set the phone outside on my dorm balcony and voila! I have GPS finally. long annoying struggle but you guys are awesome. shadow-techs fixed work. thanks guy.s
now the next question, is there a shadow-tech type fix to increase the AGPS for the Sprint Touch, my room mate is now jealous that I get gps where he doesn't (i love it, haha) |
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
It would work but I'm not sure because I've heard Sprint does AGPS already.

|
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
same procedure.
just different ip adress an port. there is a cab file for each carier in the zip file. each carrers info is in post#2. did u read the top of post #1? it says what carriers and devices it works on. |
Re: Help, Alltel GPS on WM6.1
wow, i feel like an idiot, for some reason i thought it only said the 6800 and 6700, my bad. thanks for the patience
