new idea

ok, I was going to say this is a nue idea but I thought I'd open this to anybody capable (i'm not), as his plate's pretty full at the moment.

I had this idea the other day when I was twiddling my thumbs for 15mins waiting for a light to turn off. I've been putting in alot of motion sensing light switches these days, but recently put some in a restaurants bathrooms. being this is a bad place for light to be randomly turning off, I had to make sure they stayed on the correct time.
Originally I was thinking someone should make a program that watches the camera for light/dark, much like the motion detecting webcam apps for pc's.

but then a noob's thread caught my attention, he was asking about the ("white dot above U & I") light sensor on the keyboard....
duh, how simple, why didn't I think of that, oh wait, I did, just forgot we had that hardware.

sooo, does anybody else have any other uses for an app that could log/sms/email/exe when the light level reaches a certain point?
anybody capable of creating such a thing?

well, apparently nobody thinks it's a good idea..

I did think of another (more common) use for something like this.

I wonder if the light sensor could still be accessed when the keyboard is closed. if so It would be handy to have the backlight auto adjust based on how much light is around.
sunny=bright lcd
dim/dark = less bright lcd..

I have my brightness set 2 notches down from full when on battery, but at night this could easily be put down to less than half, thus saving precious juice.

I think this is a good idea!! Kinda like what the iPhone does.

When the keyboard is closed the light sensor isn't getting any light, so it would always appear 'dark'. Also there is a good chance this light sensor cannot actually determine the amount of light but just has a threshhold and two outputs 'light' or 'dark'. As for the logging of sms/etc what exactly do you mean by that?

ohhhh, stupid rotten apples....

well I'm thinking(hoping) that in the bright sunshine, enough might filter thru to trigger, and could turn the lcd to full power. (this is my biggest issue with touch screen phones. If I leave it full all the time then the battery drains way to fast)

and for the logging ect.. basically just the ability to do something, execute an app, or send an sms, or simply a log with times.

edit: but if the keyboard has to be open, that wouldn't be the end of the world, still easier than trying to see what your doing, to get in and change the backlight setting.

maybee once no2chem is done his software wifi switch you will be able to somehow link the wifi switch to the backlight, and when the switch is on, backlight is full, and when it's off, it goes to whatever the settings are

Also you can assign a hardware button to change the backlight level with certain apps, I do just that with spb pocket plus.... It also has a cool alt-tab style thing that you can assign to a hardware button too (and you can make the default action still available by holding the button - example I use the comm manager button to change my backlight level but if I hold it down it will still bring up the comm manager, also if I hold down the IE button it brings up skyfire etc).
