Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

i myself have never had a titan for more than a week and am a vogue user, but found this very interesting.

just wanted to post this here in order to get in some more exposure and to let you guys have a whack at it!

please contribute if you can

quote from developer: "...It should work on titan (but might be short of memory and keys may not work), doesn't work on kaiser because the hardware is slightly different."

please post here (or in the other thread) on if this works/what works and doesnt!

running/trying out android(/linux) does not require you to flash/hard reset your device.

Hmm... I'm not willing to experiment with it until someone gets the radio working but definitely sounds awesome!

just to get this out in the open, this doesnt require the flashing or hard resetting or anything of the like of your device. you simply run it. to get back to windows you reset your device, and you're good to go. will update first post with this info so ppl know.

so basically...there isnt much risk. certainly not anything a reflashing of bootloader/radio/rom couldnt fix.

Yeah I know that but I still don't even want to bother with the possibility of having to hard reset until the radio works. That's all I'm saying.

needs 25nb free ram, right?

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

if it needs 25MB... Its not going to run on 6.0/6.1 for sure lol.

Are any of the 5.0 ROMs still floating around? lol

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

Yeah, I was trying it too. Any way of getting dcd's running 6.1 down to have 25mb free?

warlock 04-05-2008 03:33 AM

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

I did just that(dcd 3.0.1), it actually doesnt need 25 MB, about 23 will suffice.
I closed what i could in the startup folder, turn off the today plugins.
Soft reset, use htc task manager to kill activesync, load up file explorer and click haret.

I get to the GoGoGo stage and the progress bar goes all the way, but then i get freeze (LEDs still work though...weird) I'm working on some other things to try to get it to boot. Then again, maybe if i had that extra 2MB of RAM it would go....bah.

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

Yeah I'm thinking it just doesn't have enough RAM.

In order for us to get this to run, we'll probably have to go back to WM5 on our devices... but since there is currently no way to downgrade once you have the GPS ROM without a nasty brick.....

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

You should be able to go back to a pre GPS ROM. You'll need to relock your phone. You may also need an older bootloader. I would think you could get to 25 MB of free RAM with No2Chem's 5060 basekit with the ppckitchen. I just did a soft reset and get 21 MB free with a 4 MB page size, quickmenu, ms voice command, HTC Home plugin, and a Mort Script running.

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

Could easily get to 25 if thats whats needed.

EtherealRemnant 04-05-2008 01:19 PM

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

There would be a huge performance sacrifice to get to 25 though.

I'll toy with making a "clean" ROM tonight.

And tyante - ImCoKeMaN has said not to try to downgrade from a GPS to pre-GPS ROM or an unrecoverable brick may result.

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

You can get 26mb free easily with my stock rom. This program however will gradually eat more ram.

Re: Linux / Android on Vogue (Titan?)

From reading this it looks like we are better off waiting for someone to figure out how to boot linux from directly from the bootloader (meaning without loading WM first) so that all the ram is available....I haven't read enough to even know if that is possible, but seems to me if Android is ever going to be usable on the Titan this would be a prerequisit.

yeah. but it's still fun to play with. Like a "look what i got and you dont" to your friends.

The new GPS radio is highly dependent on the OS and SPL as well and not compatible with previous versions. This puts it in a inconsistent state when you try to revert and the radio protection keeps you from fully going back. Mine are in a black screen called download mode at the moment. If they become fixable there will be a post about it as soon as it's ready.

Then of course his sig says:

Quote:

WARNING: Using anything from Special_4350.nbh file can cause unrecoverable (at least as of now) bricking of devices (I have a dead mogul to prove it!) (Also: titan GPS radio on vogue = bad idea)

from -> http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=239687

Although his post refer'd to wM5 not WM6 non GPS and his sig has nothing to do with the post (as far as i can tell) when i responded that it was possible as per theory, i was met with a quick and harsh reply (also with no explaination)

I don't know why people are so concerned with having a higher megapixel camera. Megapixels only determine the size (resolution) of the picture. They have absolutely nothing to do with the quality. Picture quality is the product of a good sensor, good focus, the and absence of noise. They could bump it up to 12MP and still have no increase in quality.

As far as VGA is concerned, I hope it's not. 480x640 on a 2.8" screen would be impossible to use without increasing the text size, and that would defeat the whole purpose of the higher resolution.

If i were to purchase a new camera, i think i would prefer 12MP vs 3MP - for the same reason, i would prefer that my mobile device had a 12MP camera !!! Those pictures would be awesome once xfer'd to a computer ;-)

If my mogul had a 12MP camera i would prolly use it EVERYDAY !!!

Actually, a 12MP camera on a phone would be pretty ****ty.
1) The more MP you cram on a chip, without increasing light-gathering properties, the worse the image. This was experienced with many digital-cameras years ago when larger MP chips hit the market. IT took a year or two to balance out the problems (and still exists in many lower end cameras).

2) You'd be able to save like 2-4 images on your phone. The files would be huge. So you'd have super large files of crappy pictures.
