First time fooling around with ROM flashing... quick question
Hey guys,
So I get my new Mogul today very soon, and after having done some reading, I think I want to install no2chem's newest ROM so I can improve the speed of Windows Mobile. I just have a couple quick questions as I have never done this before. 1) Anything I need to do before I flash? My phone will already have 3.35 preloaded. Should I activate the phone service first prior to flashing or does that not matter? 2) If I screw up somehow or I just don't like the custom ROM, is it as simple as running the HTC 3.35 utility to get things back to the way they were before? 3) Are there any program compatibility issues with custom ROMs (no2chem's specifically)? and finally, 4) How long does it take? THANKS for all the help in advance, I'm really quite nervous about this whole thing! I'm still not even sure if I'm up to it to be honest, but I don't want to go entering data into the phone and then have to turn around and delete everything when I decide I want to improve my device's speed. Re: First time fooling around with ROM flashing... quick question
I might not even bother with this in truth, I'm sort of getting cold feet about the whole deal (as stupid as that sounds). If I just run 3.35 WM 6.0, is it really that much slower?

Re: First time fooling around with ROM flashing... quick question
I'd just play around with it stock until you get bored. Until you know where the device falls short, you won't appreciate the improvements in some of the custom ROMs/Kitchens. The stock ROM is actually pretty good.

Re: First time fooling around with ROM flashing... quick question
Thanks bedoig and justpctech, I really appreciate the input.
I am planning on installing the following: SPB Backup SPB Diary SPB Weather SPB Pocket Plus FTouchFlo HTC Cube OpenGL (SCLPC++) Insight Phone Suite ontactBreeze Resco Utility Pack Opera Mobile TCPMP Palringo So I hope they all play nice and that it still leaves me with a little bit of memory to spare and a fairly responsive system. I'm a Windows PC expert, but I know very little about Windows Mobile (this is my first ever PDA phone). I know the Mogul is limited in terms of RAM so I think Pocket Plus will at least help with that predicament (by making the X button actually close apps), but I'm still hoping that things don't seem too sluggish. If anyone has any suggestions as to replacemenets/omissions from the above list, I'd love to hear them. :) And a big thank you again to all of you for your help. It means a lot to me. Steve |
Re: First time fooling around with ROM flashing... quick question
Looks like a pretty nice list of programs. I really like Resco's utilities, and I can't live without FTouchFlo; scroll bars are so last week:)
There is a little Internet Explorer/TCPMP plugin that will let you play flash videos from a lot of sites (youtube, google video, etc.). I'm sure it's posted in multiple threads here at PPCGeeks, but you can also get it here: http://discussion.treocentral.com/showpost.php?p=1319431&postcount=1 WMWiFiRouter is a cool program that shares your phone's internet connection over WiFi. That one's another must have for me. It is free up to version .91. Available here: www.freewareppc.com/communication/wmwifirouter.shtml Google Maps and Live Search are great for mapping. A_C from XDA-Developers also makes some amazing free apps. Slide2Unlock(2) and Slide2Play (still in development) are both great. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ight=s2u2+.99p http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377627 That's about it off the top of my head :) Good luck |
Re: First time fooling around with ROM flashing... quick question
I can only tell you to read and ask questions. I never knew how much information was available at PPCGeeks until I bought a mogul and a friend advised me of it. As a community, we all help one another and correct one another. It's an awesome place to test the waters and feel reassured that there is help when you are drowning.
Good luck on your new Mogul. Once you take the leap to custom ROM's you'll never go back. I never thought I would say that I'm addicted to this phone and this site. lol rw |
