OEMs vs. CABs
 

Is there any advantage, other than saving yourself some time, to installing programs via OEMs rather than through CABs?

One big disadvantage I see is that when a new version of the program comes out, you'd need to reflash to update (rather than uninstall the old cab and install the new cab). Or is there a way to uninstall OEM'd programs too?

Is there something else I'm missing? Any performance or memory advantages to installing via OEMs?

I would like to know if there is a way to uninstall OEM's cooked in as well.

With no2chem's ROM now UC compatible...I can't see any reason NOT to use CABS. LOL. It's superhandy just to use a single config file that has the name of the CABS, that automatically runs/installs everything on the first install! very very convienent!

I tried UC, but it didn't want to read my SDConfig.txt file (said that the file wasn't found, even though it was right there!). Didn't like my XML either.

Can anyone tell my if UC-run CABs are uninstallable?

Other than saving some time, I'm not seeing the advantages of autoinstalling programs that you're then stuck with.

Yes they are manually uninstallable! That's what I use now everytime I update/hard reset no2chem's ROMS. It's fantastic!!

Troubleshooting
Is your storage card NAMED Storage Card?
Is the Txt file NON-Unicode (at least I think it was supposed to be non-unicode...check the XDA developer thread.)
Can't think of anything else off the top of my head...

OEMs were big deals in the day of the Apache because storage memory was very limited. Having large programs in ROM, such as the .NET Compact Framework, was a great way to save space.

In the day of the Titan, they are more designed to let you have things the way you want right after a hard reset so you don't have to install anything yourself.

OEMs are not technically uninstallable, but there is no reason to reflash just to upgrade a program in ROM. When you install the newer version via CAB, the only thing left of the old version are the files and the shortcuts. The OEM's registry entries will be overwritten with the new ones. The files aren't taking up any of your storage memory, and the shortcuts can easily be deleted.

It's all a matter of preference whether you use an OEM or a CAB. There is no performance difference and the impact on storage memory is almost moot since we have so much of it.

The storage card shows up as "Storage Card" in Explorer, so I'm guessing that's right (also, it can find the txt file, just not the CABs).
