Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
So after this new update and not reading before I installed, I recently bricked my rooted Epic. Just got the new one, and I went and installed the Ei22 (Gingerbread Update). Did some looking around and found step by step instructions on how to root the new Ei22 Gingerbread update. I completed the process last night without any problems. I am not sure if this is posted anywhere else, I looked and didn't find it anywhere. You will need to register to view files and video, or someone can switch it all over to PPCGeeks. Thanks to those mentioned on the website at AndroidCentral.

Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
What's with all the complexity of rooting a GB Epic??? I look at the a, b, and c instructions then there is an "UPDATE" d that needs to be done. does this mean that a,b, and c are obsolete or what?

Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
Several ways to do it and depends on what you want. If your already rooted you will need to un-root and go back to the stock Sprint Froyo ROM
1. Confirm you have gingerbread EI22. 2. Download ACS recovery 1.0.0.5.tar.md5 file and this file as well (you can use CWM purple version as well if you don’t want the acs Recovery.) 3. Put the su-3.0-efgh-signed zip file onto your sdcard and turn off the phone. 4. Boot into Download mode by holding the 1 key on the keyboard and the power key 5. Open odin and connect the phone to the computer, one of the ID:com boxes will light up to confirm it is connected. 6. Odin Mkasik's EI22 Keyboard fix Kernel put the file in the PDA area of Odin and make sure everything is uncheck except Auto-Reboot. 7. Once you have completed the above steps, place your device back into download mode again. 8. Odin the ACSrecovery.tar.md5 or the CWM purple version file using the same exact above method. If done correctly your phone should reboot directly into ACS recovery mode or CWM purple version. Once in recovery flash the su-3.0-efgh-signed zip file then reboot the phone. Very easy my man, Samsung made it a little harder to have the custom recovery stick and this is why you must flash a custom Kernel as well. If you don't want this set up since it is as close to stock as you will get with Root and a Custom recovery you can always flash to a ROM already using Gingerbread and follow the Chef's directions. |
Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
You know what is sad, I am ready to do all this (finally) but my computer won't recognize my phone when I plug it in after setting it in "download mode" and running Odin!
It works fine as a mass storage device, just not when in download mode. I have all Samsung drivers installed and am running Windows 7 professional! |
Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
Sheesh, what a pain. I was finally able to get my USB to connect to Odin, ran through the steps posted in the thread linked by the OP (Rooting ei22 Gingerbread Instructions) and have finally rooted my phone.
Dumb question..... Now what???? What can I do that I couldn't do before? How do I remove all the Sprint Bloatware? |

Lol, install a Custom GB Rom like this http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/sprint-epi...available.html Which would have eliminated the need to do all that stuff posted above! |
Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
CRAP! More steps? Where is the tutorial to install a custom ROM?
Also, what the heck did I just install? The SU***.zip file I mean.... |

Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
OK, I downloaded this file:http://era.techfumaster.com/ERA_EI22_RC_2.zip
Now I place it on my SD Card Root directory, Boot my phone into Setup mode (volume down + Power Button + Camera Button) and select the ERA_EI22_RC_2.zip file and that's it? In case I don't like it or something goes wrong, how do I flash back to stock Gingerbread? |
Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
What is Cyanogen Mod? I heard a friend talk about that one, is it just another mod like the legendary?

Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
Also, please forgive my ignorance in this matter, I think I have read WAAAAAY too much on how to do this and have become confused! lol!

You can make a full backup with clockwork before you flash a rom. Then go back to it later if you want. Cyanogen mod 7 is a highly supported custom rom . Runs great on my nook color, but still has bugs on the epic. Sent from my SPH-D700 using PPCGeeks |
Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
Ahhhh, now it's getting more clear.
A couple of more questions. What is the difference between wiping the cache and doing a full restore on the phone prior to flashing the Mod? I was watching the video and the guy said he prefers a full wipe/restore on the phone prior to flashing the mod. What all does just wiping the cache do? does it also delete anything on the SD card? What does " Dalvik X3" mean? |
Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
Also, is there just a standard ROM that is like GB but removes all the CIQ? I like what I read on the Legendary ROM but I'm not sure if I'll like the layout.....

Wiping data removes everything, no not your SD card, takes a google sign in and reinstall of apps. No big deal.
I do it every time, takes a few minutes to restore where you were, you can backup texts with SMS backup. Sent from my SPH-D700 using PPCGeeks |
Re: Root Instructions for Gingerbread update!
The difference between mods like Cyanogen and MUIU is they are based on stock Android source code released by Google. Other roms are usually modified versions of stock roms that came with the phone.
