Clockwork 25 versus clockwork 3.0
 

hey guys i just reflashed my phone using the 290 MB exe from samsung website.. i guess thats better since thats a full ROM and not just un upgrade ROM like the 91 MB installed on top of the stock eclair....any as some of you may know the ROOT ALONG WITH THE CLOCKMOD ARE GONE. so i want to root my phone again but i noticed that there are w clockwork mods . so i i dont know wich root or wich clockwork mod do i need. the 2.5 or the 3.0 since i dont know about this ext4. i dont know what ext4 is.. iam just the type a person that mainly uses stock roms . i even havent tryed installing a costum rom since i dont really know how to.. but imaybe one of these days ill try a costum ROM.. but at this moment i rather just root my phone to use the wifi router and what ever other aps that need the phones to be rooted,, but i just want the right root along with the right clockwork mod.. also what is the big issue or deal of kernels. i dont know what the kernels are but if they improve the phones performance then i will like to know what they do.. thanks in advance

cwm 2.5.5 not 3 if your not gonna use ext4. old cwm is rfs and new is 3+

ok what is ext4? and by the way this is what i ment. one.click.root.exploitv2.5.5 and one.click.root.exploitv2.3.0 ... my bad i tough it was 3.0 my bad. its just that my eye vision isnt that great.. but wich of these 2 shoudl i use ? or wich one is the ext4 or what ever that is. i have no clue.. i know when i got the phone i guess it had the 2.5.1.0 or some crap like that. not 100% positive.. and after i did this upgrade it removed the root and the clockwork mod as well..

You said that your phone already had Clockwork installed when you got it? You obviously didn't buy it new because it doesn't come with the phone. Like Darren said you really need to educate yourself before you go messing with flashing custom ROMs and kernels. Check out the wiki here:

well it was a brand new phone. it just needed to be flashed to boost mobile and rooted as well and of coarse root came with clockwork already in it.. but like i said from the biggining. i did the upgrade to the new FROYO update so of coarse i losted the root and clockwork mod. thats why i created this post to find out wich root with clockword do i need to re root my phone again. since there is clockwork 2.5.5 and clockwork 3.0 since i dont know what is the big difference of benefits ot this so called EX4 or what ever that is that comes in clockwork mod 3.0... aby the way i had never used a costum ROM. all i have been using is the stock Eclair 2.1 that came on the phone from factory and now the new Official Froyo Update 2.2 that came out last week... so in other word iam just STOCK all the way around.. maybe in the future ill try one of this costums ROMS.. but i have been reading about all this kernel stuff that i dont even know what they do or what is the difference between using one kernel or the other. thats all i ask.

OK, I got it. I just noticed that your profile says you're on Boost so now it makes sense.

Let me see if I can break it down a little for you.

The kernel is the core of the operating system. It is the part of the ROM that controls the CPU. Custom kernels give you more control over how the CPU operates. "OC" means Overclocked, which means that the CPU is running faster than stock. The developers can also undervolt the CPU at the same time they overclock it, meaning it runs faster and uses less power. Less power consumption = longer battery life. So the two main benefits of a custom kernel are your phone is faster and the battery lasts longer.

As far as EXT4 goes, that is a little more complicated. I'll try not to go too far down the rabbit hole with the technical stuff, but basically it refers to the OS file system. If you know anything about Windows computers, you know that the two fie systems are NTFS and FAT32. Android phones are based on the Linux operating system, and they can either be RFS or EXT4. RFS is the stock file system currently used for Eclair and Froyo. Gingerbread is based on EXT4. If you do a little research you can read all about the differences, but in a nutshell EXT4 is faster.

Clockworkmod 2.5.5 is the latest version that supports RFS. CWM3 is the latest version that supports EXT4. Once you decide which direction you want to go, its an all or nothing decision. If you stick with RFS you must make sure to only use ROMs, kernels, themes, etc that are scripted for RFS. If you decide to go with EXT4 then you have to make sure that any ROM, kernel, theme, etc that you want to flash is scripted for EXT4.

Which one you choose is up to you. There are lots of arguments on both sides, so do some research and choose what is best for you. My personal opinion is if you are a tech junkie like me and want to keep updated with the latest and greatest, go with EXT4 because that is where Android is headed in the future. If you just want your phone to make phone calls, check your email and occasionally surf the internet, stick with RFS. There is plenty of support for both right now.

Here's what you can do just to keep it simple. Use the One-Click Root w/Clockwork 2.5.5. Then go here:

Read all the way through the first post. This kernel should give you a more speed and better battery life, plus it fixes a few of the bugs that stock EB13 has. Download the kernel to your SD card and then use Clockworkmod to flash it. Kernels flash in about 10 seconds. MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU DO THIS! In fact, you should back up everything before you flash anything.

Then spend some time researching the various custom ROMs out there. The best thing about them is that the devs remove a lot of the crap that Sprint puts on there, which saves memory and speeds up everything else.
