That's because they all go through the same band. Sms is part of Sprint's network on 1x side but the voice is part of sprint 3g so if you're talking on the phone its either one or the other. But you can't do both.

i can!!!!!!! rooted my phone so i can wifi on 4g and text and talk on my phone all at once with no hick ups.

yes if you use 4g..you can talk and text without being effected..on 3g though its impossible unless you use wifi for data or voip for voice and data for text..
