Thanks for the page, but when I went to root (Epic) I tried to click on the 32bit. It said " The website declined to show"

Re: Epic 4G Wiki - All Most Common Questions and Answers + Tips + Guides

I found a GPS fix for the samsung moment that works on my epic and my wife's intercept FWIW... (not sure how to add this to the wiki)

copy/pasted from SDX... GPS Improvment? ***Use at your own risk***

by member "android"

Quote:

have found that by modifing one setting i have now been able to get a GPS lock inside a building and much faster locks outside.

1. Goto your dialer press *#1472365#
2. Click the setup button
3. Click Position Mode
4. Click Operating Mode
5. Set to MSAssisted. It seems that Sprint added the options for aGps but by default it is off.
6. Click Back arrow 4 times

To set Start Mode:
1. Goto your dialer press *#1472365#
2. Click the setup button
3. Click Position Mode
4. Click Starting Mode
5. Set to One of Cold, Warm, Hot
6. Click Back arrow 4 times

Enjoy a hopefully faster and Better GPS.

There are other settings in there, but I did not have the time to fully explore.

EDIT: I noiticed that after I made this change that the akmd2 process came back and squashed my poor battery. I think the process is related to the starting mode (Hot, Warm, Cold). I have set this to cold it will probably take longer to get a lock but, it should control that process. I will report back. EDIT: This change seems to have made a difference with the akmd2 process.

Difference between MS Asisted and MS Based.

What is MS-Assisted mode of operation?
In MS-Assisted mode, the network elements calculate the location of the device. This mode is suitable for one-shot fixes, wherein the location does not need to be updated frequently.

What is MS-Based mode of operation?
In MS-Based mode, the network provides the satellite information to the device, based on a rough estimate of where the device is located, and the device acquires the GPS signals from the satellites and calculates its location. After the initial fix, the device operates like an autonomous GPS receiver, until the satellite information must be refreshed, at which time the device goes back to the network to update the satellite information. MS-Based mode is appropriate for applications that require the device location to be updated rapidly, such as a navigation application.

Anyone can modify the wiki by hitting Edit...if you mess up you can always restore a previous version...

That said I have that under the general Samsung Galaxy S wiki:

http://wiki.ppcgeeks.com/index.php?t..._Galaxy_Series

its gonna takes some time but I hope to cross-reference both wikis where cross device stuff will go under Samsung Galaxy Series and things specifically for the Epic will go to the Epic

Ok cool. Didn't see the "general Galaxy" section.

Thanks for trying to organize the Wiki too.. it's gonna help big time once these bad boys get rollin'

Wow gTen, just checked out the Epic Wiki - excellent layout! Best idea ever for keeping track of proven tweaks and FAQ's.

One thing though, the quoted text boxes are really hard to read - very small text. I tried editing it but I don't see where the font is set. Can you make the text a little bigger?

I just looked at the Wiki page in Internet Explorer and it looks fine. The problem is that I use Google Chrome 99% of the time, and in Chrome the boxed sections appear very small and in a difficult to read font. I don't know if there is a fix for this, but I hope so because I hate using IE.

Soooooo, um....are you going to get mad if I tell you it didn't work?

It all looks great with Internet Explorer but the boxed sections are still very hard to read with Google Chrome. Have you looked at it in Chrome? If you have, and it looks good to you, then there must be a setting in my browser that I need to change.

ya know what....never mind. If I hit CTRL+ it zooms in and makes the whole thing much easier to read. I don't want you to go to any trouble if I can adjust it on my end with a simple click.

Thanks for all the hard work!

I use chrome all the time...It was smaller but I upped the font size to 120%...did you refresh?

Yes but its still really small. Don't worry about it. Maybe its just me. I can adjust my screen anyway.

I'm using a little older version of chrome 5.0.375.99...is it maybe a thing with the new version?

can anyone else using chrome confirm/deny this?

If you want I can enforce a static font size will only take 1 sec..what size do you want?

Well, if its easy to do (and undo) try it and lets see what happens.

It must be something with this version of Chrome. Really, nothing you have done has made the slightest change. It still looks exactly the same to me as it did before. But like I said, don't worry about it. I'll adjust my screen.

Unless this is an issue with other people here, I wouldn't put too much more effort into this. CTRL+ is a really easy and fast fix for me.

Well, that was weird. I messed around with the resolution settings on my monitor but ended up going back to the original settings I had, and now the wiki looks great. IDK what happened, but problem solved.

Now when people look at this forum they are going to see that its 3 pages long and think "hmmm, what important conversation is going on here?".

Sorry folks, its just me and my damn monitor!

Your monitor will live in infamy...

but nah don't worry about it most people are too lazy to read past the first page..mostly since give it a year or so and it'll most likely be 100 pages long...The point of the wiki was actually so people don't have to read through pages to get information lol

LOL, you're probably right. BTW I made a few corrections and minor edits on the main Galaxy S page and I noticed that the tiny font thing is still going on over there. Did you make the changes to just the Epic 4G wiki or to both of them?

I only made the changes to the Epic forum..the Galaxy S one I did long ago and it needs an overhaul...I plan to see how development turns out a bit before deciding how to merge them... particularly Epic being on Tw2.5...

Otherwise I plan to move all the Applications, Widgets, a lot of the Q & A and etc...aka keep all thing unique to the Epic in the Epic section and reference all the cross-compatible stuff in the Samsung Galaxy Series..or I may branch out each category to each own page and cross-reference it everywhere...

But before doing anything major I want our community to build up a bit so that we can decide as a community on what to do. While I'm building out the Epic section bit by bit to be ready.

Busybox gives you extra root linux functions that were not available before.

and Remount script I think when you do a modification to the system you need to remount it...

Quick question: Got my wife an Epic 4G and it will charge via the computer but it wont mount and load her SD card for mass storage mode even though she has enabled it on the phone. Any ideas?

Try installing the drivers?

Also did you root the device?

You shouldn't need to install drivers. Plug it in and let it try to install the windows drivers automatically. Which operating system are you using anyways? I've had some luck by trying different USB ports on the PC.

Plugging the epic into a PC is very finnicky. Sometimes I'll get an error saying it wasn't found and it's unusable. I unplug it and then try a different slot and it works. All else fails, try rebooting the phone and trying again. It will work without drivers if you just want to mount USB as mass storage to transfer files

gTen,

I know you have been updating the wiki pretty regularly, but don't we need to update the section about the GPS? Haven't all the issues been pretty much worked out?

Actually I was about to but I want to make sure that the gps issues have indeed been fixed. Has anyone tested the latest update to see if the ephemeris issue has been resolved?
