I believe the fold Design patented here by HTC is in accoradance to their plans to build a Tablet like E-reader like device, somewhat like the Microsoft Courier, but possibly based on Windows Mobile 7's core as HTC has been looking for alternative to their Android based tablet, which has not gathered enough interest yet.

This device would flip from Right to Left, as opposed to from Down to Top Clamshell design, and resembling more of a book interface with pages.
HTC Quietly Brilliant indeed. They have patents on the page interface aswell with the device standing like a book
