apparently the blocking of those ips really helped the server load. as I havent seen a 500 error since recieveing the email, but Im still looking into a dedicated box. :)

Hello,

We had to firewall the following IPs for making excessive connections to
your site forum.ppcgeeks.com, this caused your site to slow down and the
apache to become overloaded.

The IPs were (# on the left is the connections being made)

1014 75.24.90.214

1040 66.249.70.101

1052 24.118.28.90

1330 198.253.30.237

1398 24.124.21.196

1525 71.36.49.58

1663 144.226.230.36

2971 144.226.173.68

6076 82.114.185.195

We have blocked the IPs from connecting the your server so that it will
not bring your site down again. If this is not an IP that you want
blocked please let us know what it is being used for and we will see what
we can work out.

Also the 66.249.70.101 IP if from Google, if you want to continue to get
searched by google you will need to remove this IP from the htaccess
file; But before you do that please read up on how to limit how much
google crawls your site to keep the load down.

Thanks!
maybe this was the problem......running MUCH better now!

shawnhenson 10-18-2007 04:51 PM

ok if you want ask bill at mr2oc he had the same problems you had with speed and downtime. Good to know its back up tho. I had to find stuff to do to fill my time

I must say, that last IP banned would concern me. 6076 hits from an IP in yemen? Maybe you might check out the possibility of the server being an unknowing zombie? A quick google check found a close IP (same server or ISP) related to حمود الطلاع - صدى صرخة (قطر) Hammoud Tlaa-resonance cry (Qatar) 82.114.185.203 (google translation, take with a grain of salt). Just the conspiracy theorist in me raising his eyebrow.

Ditto here. I got thru a couple times, but wasn't able to do anything. Much better now. I agree with all those in favor of this site going to a free/pay membership to support it, primarily because of the "extras" like the Kitchen that are available nowhere else.

Thanks!

They are blocking googlebot! I'd say your time with this hosting provider is long overdue. Until you move to a dedicated service, configure vB not to show posts older than 6 months max (it will minimize indexing) and tell your provider to unblock bot IPs before your domain gets black listed. A robots.txt file won't do squat to prevent rogue bots from crawling you, do it through vB.

Meanwhile the best you can do is not panic. Forum members always come back to sites they enjoy, especially if they're more enjoyable on a fast server :)
