considering getting the omnia
 

so im interested in the omnia, how is it compaired to the storm? good browser? fast? lag often? how is it for email/texting?

i just want a phone that works well or at least has the ability to work well with updated software

omnia has much better browser [not pie, but opera]. Plus there are a few different third party browsers. It is fast, idk how it is compared to the storm, but i hated browsing on the storm. Texting is good for windows mobile, i love threaded texting, plus there are many many different keyboards to choose from.
You will probably want to flash a custom rom after you get the hang of it. WM 6.5 is great!!

Apples and oranges, they're 2 different phones. I have both. Browser options are a plenty for the omnia which includes skyfire for streaming vid, not yet available for the storm as it's in alpha. Speed is no comparison, the omnia has a faster processor. Lag is a matter of memory usage for both, though the omnia handles it better due to winmo. And as far as email, BB hands down due to the bis and bes.

I bought the Omnia, my wife bought the Storm...she hated hers, didn't like how slow the web browsing was, hated the keyboard, and to make matters worse, it bricked after 1 week of light use, for no apparent reason at all. I'm running Adryn's CF03 V2 WinMo 6.5 rom, and it's awesome. I have to reboot on occasion (most likely because I tweak the crap out of this thing), but other then that I love it!

Can someone speak about the voice quality and signal strength? I've been using WM for a very long time but my XV6800 gave up and I went with the Storm. There are definitely some things I like about it. I did have to download a leaked OS to make it work better but people complain about how I sound when I'm talking to them on the phone. I've been told it sounds like I have a towel over the phone and sound muffled. The signal isn't as good as my old phone either. I need a PDA and a phone but it seems that PDA phones always lack in speaker and sound quality. I have an idea that part of it is because you can't turn voice privacy off on the storm and I know that made a big difference on my XV. Any comparisons between the Omnia and the XV if nothing vs the Storm? I only have another 7 days to decide if I want to keep it. Thanks

I'm very happy with the voice quality. I use mine for business and am on it constantly, and no one has complained as to how I sound. As for the signal strength, I would say it's about average, no worse then my LG Envy that I had. I notice when I am in an area with poor coverage, it sucks down the battery very quickly, trying to get a few more bars, particularly when it is looking for a 1x signal. Overall I am extreamly happy with my phone, and have no plans to retire it.

Don't do it...You'll become a F/A. I love the phone. Great for browsing very quick. Customizable to no end. A lot of fun.

I would say that signal strength has been great, I haven't noticed any problems whatsoever. And while I don't think this phone has the best sound quality it's still very good. My wife's LG Chocolate 3 (normal flip phone) has better sound quality, but I'm used to mine and it's not an annoyance at all.

probuild - unless this is for work/business, WM-based phones give you a lot of software options. And as you'll see in the ROM forums we love to fiddle with new software. Also, you should try to type a text message on the Storm vs. Omnia and see which touch screen feedback type you like the best. I personally just didn't care for the Storm pressure/sensor feedback as much which is why I chose the Omnia. And from what I've read a lot of users agree -- supposed to be new model coming out that changes the tactile response. Omnia is also a bit smaller/pocket friendlier.

Signal strength - Great
Voice quality - very good
Speed - very good, esp with most recent ROM update.
GPS is now unlocked -- you can use Google Maps, Bing, etc. (no VZNav charges!)
Opera Browser -- Great fast, good rendering
WiFi - esp. after the latest ROM update, very good! Didn't get the benefit until I started browsing the web over WiFi vs. 3G -- much faster!


Some Omnia cons?

Edit: 1) Screen brightness when outdoors -- almost unreadable.

2) There seems to be a couple of software apps that cause Omnia to overheat -- it happened to me and others using WeatherPanel, an old/non-supported Today screen app. that's really cool but is basically end of life and has no real owner. That kind of stuff...not a pervasive issue by any means. Doesn't seem to be a heat problem with the handset per se, more like buggy apps can put the phone into a endless loop or something that eventually overheats it. Very minor worry...

3) GPS is Ok, but I don't think the radio is all that great. Almost impossible to get a satelite lock indoors (not that GSP in your living room is critical, but just illustrating its not a very strong signal receiver). So if you really want to use GPS that might be a consideration - for casual use its good.
