Android on the Omnia
This is a thread im stealing from another forum but very interesting stuff.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/0...amsungs-omnia/ Android on the omnia... I personally am very satisfied with winmo but if I happened to have a spare omnia this would be alot of fun I think. Not ever planning on switching even if it did release but cool non-the-less. |
Re: Android on the Omnia
I cant wait for this, sadly i went from a touch pro to an omnia. But ,i am satisfied with this phone, but winmo does not compliment what this phone has to offer. GO ANDROID!

OK that was beside the point... I love winmo and all it has to offer but I love things that are new and interesting. As another user often says "the bleeding edge" Maybe by the time this is ready I will have upgraded to an omnia 2 or something and I can mess around with my current omnia. |
Re: Android on the Omnia
ya i booted it up on my i910 and i have to say it is pretty cool probably just cause it's new. I don't know if i would switch or not cause i don't feel like have to buy apps. But one pro over winmo is the ui and everything is way more finger friendly and usable right off the bat.

I wonder what type of problems I would have if I tried to load this and then go back to winmo. In theory I should be able to flash like normal right cause the boot portion of the device should not be affected by changing the os? A little scetchy at this point for me to just start playing. |

Yea.. I've seen this. I believe you can run both os's wimmo and android. |

Re: Android on the Omnia
Ya it wont hurt your winmo it just boots from your sd card. No there is no calls they still have to build all the drivers for things like phone cdma modem, 3g, and all that stuff. but you can boot it up and play around with the os and you just reset or take the battery out. it is pretty cool and i am sure they well get that stuff working sooner or later.

Re: Android on the Omnia
Personally I love this, not because it works well (it doesn't yet) but because the geniuses that are working on it will eventually bring it up to completely working status and the Omnia's awesome hardware will be paired with an OS that is fresh and new and holds more potential than WinMo for development (come on, it's open source!) and is just better to use. I can't wait until they get it cleaned up and working.
The trickiest part is getting into a Linux OS on your computer to format the SD card to an ext2 partition then copying the files on to it (I'm a computer guy and I had to jump through some hoops to get it working), then it takes a while to boot, then you can't do much with it. But you can navigate with the touchscreen and use the buttons just fine. If you can get it working, you have nothing to lose, as stated previously, you just launch an exe which loads android, then you can pull the battery and power up to get back to winmo. I would wait until it gets more functional. |

Re: Android on the Omnia
The developers have been working on the project quite a bit and as of this post they're on revision 154 (the modaco thread lists only 103). Since then, it's gotten a bit more stable, and they've added working drivers for the LED, battery and Wi-Fi. This means you can actually use it for internet and applications! I've added a few games and they work fine. Apps aren't as easy to find as CABs for WinMo but they're out there. (hint: you have to enable 3rd party applications from the settings before they will run)
Sound still doesn't work and and program that tries to create one will crash and if the screen automatically shuts off, there's no way to get it back but to pinhole reset; also the only way to exit is pinhole reset. Battery life isn't very good either and the phone will run very hot (both most likely due to the same cause, I think the CPU is running at full speed all the time). Otherwise, it runs quite well and I can't wait to see where it goes. More info is available on http://andromnia.net (which I can't visit right now because OpenDNS can't find the site :) ) like how to download the latest source code, create the image and set up the phone/SD card to run. That part's a bit complicated and you need Linux to format the card to ext3. Still worth the effort IMO. |
Re: Android on the Omnia
searching for news of android on Verizon Omnia i910. Anyone help with this?
|
Re: Android on the Omnia
You can still check out their website at http://andromnia.net/redmine/
I believe their site was hacked a couple of times and the forums overrun with spam, so they've started over. I don't think there's been much progress since the summer which is too bad. |
Re: Android on the Omnia
That site is still down, if it exist anymore. I see there is alot of progress with the i900 but not the i910 due to its different chipset, GSM vs. CDM.
I saw a clip on youtube claiming to have android on a i910 thru a boot from WinMo. Trying to find more information on this just keeps leading to dead post and down websites. frustrating ](*,) |
