Home Networking

My friend Google and I have been unsuccessful in finding a way to use the Omnia 910 for home networking (found nothing in the forum search either). I can access the internet OK via wifi, but I want to be able to use the Omnia to access files on my PC, and vice-versa.

The desktop is running Windows Vista and is cabled to a wireless router. Through this router, I can wirelessly network another desktop and two other portable PC's (one of which is Linux) but I cannot figure out how to network the Omnia.

Can anyone help?

Some time ago I was able to move files back and forth once I ran wifirouter on the Omnia and connected my vista laptop to it. It's been a while but after connecting I think I used total commander on the phone to read \\machinename\share and get a directory of the share and move files.

I got the idea reading somewhere about it and that trying to go through a common home router wasn't the way to go.

Thanks for the responses, but I was hoping for a WM6 solution. There are two concerns about using WMWifiRouter: (1) It costs $30, and (2) more importantly, I am anxious about the disclaimer "if the data connection is active and you use WMWifiRouter while roaming, it can and will result in even higher charges, often regardless of regular unlimited mobile data plans". Yikes!

I love WMWifiRouter. And I'm pretty sure the only way that you could possibly "roam" on a VZW unlimited plan would be if you were on international towers.

Hi all, you can connect your PPC to your home network via wifi. If you want to share files with your PC both the PPC and the PC must be on the same subnet, meaning connected to the same switch. On the PPC, using either File Explorer or Total Commander goto Open and type in "\\computername\sharename" and use the appropriate username and password if applicable. The share permissions must be set correctly on the shared directory.

Frank's approach is what I was looking for. I'm a little lost on the "open" instructions.

The closest I can come in File Explorer is by tapping "Menu" in the lower right-hand corner, and selecting "Go To" and then "Open Path". However, when I type in \\Computername\Public I get "Cannot Connect".

I couldn't find any Open command in Total Commander, but found that if I went to \\Plugins and then to "LAN" and selected "_Quick open" I could enter \\Computername\Public and indeed open a connection to the desktop! It takes a long time to connect but it does work. I wish I could make the new path a menu item so I didn't have to type in the path everytime I needed a connection, but all-in-all this is a satisfactory solution. Thanks Frank!
