Changing the Opera cache location

I had been noticing that my device storage available constantly decreases. I finally found the culprit...the cache file for Opera. Is there any way to set Opera to cache its files into My Storage rather than my device? I looked in Opera under settings, but although you can adjust the cache size (and I did adjust it down from 4 MB to 2 MB) I'd really like to get it on My Storage where it can be as big as it wants and I never have to worry about it again.

Thanks,

Devin

Yes. Open Opera, go to the address opera:config.

Under User Prefs, locate Cache Directory4. Change it to \My Storage\"insert your folder name"

Screenshot of the edit you made? That seems odd.

Let me doublecheck mine, pretty sure it stuck.

Mine stuck. It should be noted that it will not move the old cache files. Those need to be manually removed.

lemme ask u do I go into my "my storage" and create a "cache" folder first? or will it create one on its own when I change this setting..

It will create its own. But note what I said above, the files in the old cache must be nuked.

I went ahead and left the folder, but I dont forsee a problem removing the old cache folder. It would certainly prove whether or not the change really took place :D

Hi Adrynalyne,

I know this post is kind of old, but if you happen to see this, can this be done with Iris as well, and maybe Skyfire? Those are the ones I use the most anyway (thanks to you for recommending Iris! lol)

Edit: I seemed to have done it okay on Iris, I just went on preferences and it lets you change where you put the Cache. You have to choose an actual folder though, so I just went in my storage and created a folder named IrisCache and then went and did it.

Re: Changing the Opera cache location

Hmmm, I don't use Skyfire, but for Iris, it uses the same cache as IE.

While I am sure there is a manual way to do it, I used Advanced Configuration Tool to move it.
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Tw...ls-58295.shtml

Its located under Locations.

Re: Changing the Opera cache location

Dang, I just realized that I had done this registry edit from the Samsung Forum:

07.Store cache, cookies & history to Storage Card

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Shell Folders

Cache: \Windows\Profiles\guest\Cookies >change to> \Storage Card\Cache
Cookies: \Windows\Profiles\guest\Cookies >change to> \Storage Card\Cookies
History: \Windows\Profiles\guest\History >change to> \Storage Card\History

I dont get what is the point of changing it to the Storage Card folder, since the folder is on My Device and not My Storage? Can you tell me what your registry says for those fields Adrynalyne so I can just copy you :)

Sure, let me get off this call.

Re: Changing the Opera cache location

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
"History"="\\Storage Card\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\Cache\\History"
"Cookies"="\\Storage Card\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\Cache\\Cookies"
"Cache"="\\Storage Card\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\Cache\\Temporary Internet Files"

:D

Re: Changing the Opera cache location

I meant to ask you, isn't having the cache and stuff in Storage Card the same as having it on the device? Since that folder is in My Device? Wouldnt it be better to put it on My Storage?

Adrynalyne 04-02-2009 08:12 PM

Re: Changing the Opera cache location

If its on the Storage Card, its on the micro sdhc card.

If you dont have one, then yeah, put it on My Storage.

Re: Changing the Opera cache location

Oh man. I am retarded. I forgot, I had a storage card and it started acting funny so I took it out. But I still have that folder on my device! I wonder should I just delete it or remap anything that is in it? I cant believe I forgot that I got that folder from when I put that storage card on there....

Edit:

Ack, I noticed that now when I use Memmaid, it doesn't delete any of the files in the cache folder for Opera. I guess it doesnt know about the new location?

I am a new Omni (Verizon) owner and just a little while ago tracked down the Opera cache as a memory eater.
I had MemMaid set to clear Opera cache and it wasn't doing it.
Gonna' move it to My Storage per Adrynalyne's post.

Thanks for this!

Re: Changing the Opera cache location

I have upgraded my rom to the V.cc20.20961. I have been trying to use the opera:config command to direct my opera memory cache to my storage card, but every time i go and hit save at the bottom and come back to it after doing a soft reset, it hasn't been saved. any help would be appreciated.
