cant install recovery

ok so before the official 2.1 was released, i did the cl14 update and got a leaked 2.1 rom installed it, flashed the joey recovery and rooted my phone no problems. now i have the official 2.1 rom on and i cant install recovery. i tried installing the joeykrim-SDX-recovery2.1.3 and the new 3.08 recovery. neither one will work when i push the install software button on the last step. do i need to redo the cl14 update or will that take me back to the old rom?

the NEW version of the Sprint Software Updater has a security feature that will not allow you to flash custom recovery. You need the OLD Software Updater which you can d/l here: http://www.mediafire.com/?mwmjykokgxy. You should just be able to unzip that anywhere and run it without installing. Already has Recovery 3.08 in the binary ready to install.

Thanks for posting that.

This is probably a dumb question but what's the difference between a data backup and system backup?

Is a system backup just settings etc while the data is basically an image of everything? Some clarification would be helpful. Say I needed to do a hard reset and wanted my phone back the way it was when I did a backup. Which one should I use?

Data backup makes a backup of the /data folder (personal info, apps, etc)

System backup makes a backup of the /system folder (Android System) in case you bork something while testing new things

This particular recovery does not. This will allow you the ability to root the phone and install updates. It will also allow you to create backups, which is the main reason why I installed the latest recovery. Check out this thread for more info on installing recovery and gaining root:

Specifically, post 5. If you click on the first link, it will give you instructions on how to do it

yes, you can install custom roms. it has an "Install Zip From SD" feature, which will allow you to install custom ROMS, themes from recovery. Also allows you to backup system and data, and mount system, data, and SDcard from recovery.

What is the deal with the new sprint rom? I can't get recovery loaded onto it after I did the official 2.1 update. I used the link a few posts back with the old updater. Still didn't work

you don't have the Samsung PC Studio running in the tray do you? that will cause errors, and also while your phone is plugged in, go to your Device Manager and delete the drivers and phone, this will cause it to re-install drivers the next time you try. Also make sure you are running the SWUpdater as Administrator.

you should be able to uninstall the drivers, and delete the device itself from your computer, like it was never installed. That way it will start fresh

Uninstall the new SWupdater, then d/l the old installer here: http://www6.sprint.com/downloads/sam...ent_Update.exe.Install it, Then in the program directory, go to the binary, and put the Recovery 3.0.8 in there, get that here: http://mtutor.uprh.edu/~rafael/moment/recovery3_0_8.tar. Then try again

This is what happens when you go ahead of the developers and download the Sprint junk. SDX Developers has some possible fixes listed. Someone made a script to change a DLL in the new update software to allow custom tar's to be flashed.

I have had zero issues.

Samsung makes this thing a pain.. I have spent hours trying to figure this crap out.. You HAVE TO DELETE EVERYTHING SAMSUNG off your computer and start fresh.. And I'm pretty sure the updater doesnt work on older XP machines..

Friend of mine just got a moment. They loaded 2.1 at the store when he got it. I followed the steps listed under installing recovery here:

http://forum.sdx-developers.com/andr...-custom-patch/

I installed the CL14 upgrader listed at the top and then patched it to the older version. Instructions are in the link below:

http://forum.sdx-developers.com/android-2-1-development/samsung-updater-patch-revert-to-the-old-one!/

After that, you should be good to go. And I'd recommend using this link:

http://www.joeyconway.com/sdx/custom/index.php

You can boot into recovery and then apply the .zip file you created to get root access and remove any unnecessary bloatware and even add cool themes. They are constantly upgrading the tool and you will eventually be able to update kernel files. Hope that helps.

Strange. I didn't need to start fresh when installing recovery on my friends moment. It is a pain in the butt but the best way is just to install fresh and reinstall the drivers.

What operating system? This is a video tutorial on getting them installed on Windows 7 but should work for Vista and XP (for me XP installed all the drivers once the sprint tool was installed).

if all else fails i guess you can use the Samsung PCStudio for the drivers, but uninstall afterwards cause it sucks, and messes up the SWUpdater

Well last night I screwed something up on my computer trying to set up a dual boot with xp and win7. So I wiped the hard drive and installed an old beta version of windows7. Found a windows7 32 bit version that I started downloading. I'm gonna put it on my computer and see if I have any better luck than I had with my 64 bit version.

nasa1303 05-30-2010 12:52 AM

Re: cant install recovery

got 32 bit windows7 installed and drivers were automatically loaded very quickly. seems to be no problems now that i went away from 64 bit.
