you seem to forget carriers play a role in this too... it doesnt matter if samsung is sitting on 10 updates, if carrier doesnt wanna "brand and support it", then the update will never come anyways...

It's running the same hardware that the Epic 4G does.
The Epic 4G was released FIVE months ago.
The Evo has had 2.2 available for months and even the Shift just launched with 2.2.

PLEASE tell me that Samsung is skipping right over 2.3 and going to 2.3 for the Epic.

If not, this is COMPLETE BULL$HIT.

And, NO, I don't want to flash, root, or customize my phone.
I spend over $100 a month for service and pay retail prices for phones.
My responsibility should end when I swipe my credit card.

Ok let me clarify so that you understand..

EVO and EVO shift have 2.2..the update we will be getting is 2.2.1 which is NEWER and as far as I know EVO does not have it..YET...

Now as for 2.3..this is where people don't seem to understand...ANDROID IS OPEN SOURCE!

Open source cycles work like this:

Alpha version is released..then nightlys update it..then it goes through Beta, RC1, RC2 and GA..

YOU WILL NEVER SEE GINGERBREAD ON A CONSUMER PHONE UNTIL IT HITS GA!!!

The one that was released on Nexus S is ALPHA quality software and it will receive more and more updates until it reaches GA...

So all the people need to calm down and actually understand the process..not go why arent we getting it just cause its out...Froyo for example, the first device was updated MONTHS after it came out on the Nexus One...even though they were very similar to the N1...

Well put gTen, as always. And for those of you who want to read about this in greater detail....

GTEN-

I appreciate the detailed response.

With that said....
SAMSUNG SHOULD GIVE US THE OPTION OF UPDATING DIRECTLY FROM GOOGLE TO USE AT OUR OWN RISK.

Its not that simple...there are proprietary drivers...don't think you can even load a Nexus S with the same copy thats on the Google servers...it would need modification...same for our devices...its not like getting Gingerbread is impossible.. just requires some modifications..if you've seen CM7 that is based on Gingerbread and running on our device...

so what you're saying is that the nexus s was launched with an ALPHA quality OS? I dunno, that doesn't make sense to me but then again i'm not a programmer. I know the OS gets patched frequently but doesn't alpha denote buggy unfinished software? It had to be at least RC.

Even if it still is an RC, it might still be a little on the buggy side of things. as far as I can understand, thats the point of the N1, though. It's almost a test platform for power users and programmers to get into Android and tinker with stuff. So it makes sense that they release a RC/Alpha/Beta onto it. Now, a device like the Galaxy series, which has a LOT of media attention due to heavy advertising, the OEMs wouldn't want to release a potentially buggy RC into public use because it could open them up to LOTS of support questions and RMAs for issues inherent to the nature of pre-RTM/GA software.

The Nexus S 4G from Google is announced to be released with Sprint soon! « Phone 4G

There are plenty of phones now that have Gignerbread..the Galaxy S already got Gingerbread for one...just not in the US (due to carriers)

Here is the comparison of the Epic and the Evo:
HTC EVO 4G vs. SAMSUNG EPIC 4G « Phone 4G
Thats not a very good review...you can tell person who wrote that comparison did not even try the phones..and just use preliminary information available on the web.

Not to mention:

Processor - He measures GPU speed not CPU speed.
Camera - based soley on mp number and not an actual comparison
Battery life - just says they are both 1500mah and thats that..no real numbers or comparison
Portability - He really hasn't weighed them
Connectivity - um..I dont think he realizes they are talking about wifi hotspot...and it can connect to 5,..not 4..

um..anyways why are we doing a comparison again?
